MEAC Football Roundup South Carolina State, Howard Move To Top Of MEAC Standings , by Earl Mason Victorius Howard and South ^ Carolina State has gotten the jump on the other five Mid Eastem Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams. They won conference games Saturday to move stand to the top of the MEAC standings. Howard romped to a 31-7 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md. while S.C. State won an 8-0 defensive battle over N.C.A&T in Greensboro. North Carolina Central jumped off to a 21-0 first half lead against Winston-Salem State in Durham and went on to defeat The Rams 27-7 in a non-conference game to-yve MEAC teams their ninth, win in 10 decisions against outside competition. Unbeaten Dela ware State was idle Saturday while Morgan State played Cornell in a scrimmage game at Ithaca. Howard scored 17 first half points before Maryland-E.S. got on the scoreboard and then reserve quarterback Donald Porter scored one TD and passed for another in the final stanza South Carolina State, aided by a 33-yard pass interference call against A&T, scored the game’s only touchdown on a five-yard pass from Elias O’Neal to Darius McCarthy in the first quarter. The Bulldogs added a safety late in the last period. North Carolina Central’s James Smith scored two touchdowns and quarterback Kenny Wells plunged over for another to give the Eagles a 21-0 halftime lead. Michael Banks got Howard on the scoreboard in the first quarter when he passed nine yards to Thomas Payne. State-A&T game in Greensboro was a defensive struggle that saw Bulldog halfback James nootnson gained 100 yards rushing. S.C. State’s defense did not allow A&T inside the Bulldog 20 all night. North Carolina Central cap italized on a pass interception by Lewis Breenden to move 45-yards in eight plays. Smith cracked over from the six on the last play of the first quart er. The Eagles scored two more times before intermission when Smith plunged over from the two to cap a 10-play, 52-yard march. Wells later sneaked over from the one after the defensive unit gave the Eagles the ball at the 25-yard line. > The final TD for NCCU came early in the last period when Ken Ingram plunged over from the three.
