TALMLS TILLMAN ...Mighty Mites’ Ace Talmus Tillman - An —AU-Rxmnd Athlete_ Basketball season is just beginning and football season is all over except for the bow Is and the banquets. Hut memories linger on in the form of trophies that players received for outstanding per formances. One such player was Talmus Tillman who starred at left end and safety for the South park Mighty Mites. Eleven-year-old Talmus is the son of Mrs. Lucy Tillman of 522 E. 7th St. The four feet three inch tall First Ward Elementary School sixth grader said he was happy to receive a trophy although his team as a whole was not tremendously successful. They finished with two wins five losses and one tie. Next year. Talmus will play for the Southpark Fee Wees. . ."We practiced three days a Week at Sharon Elementary School, our home field." he said. "One of the coaches either picked us up or we got a bus. Before Daylight Savings time we practiced from 3:3(1 p.m. to 7:3(1 p.m. After Dav light Savings time began, we practiced from 5 p.m. to6 p.m. m Talinns was one ol about 24 boys on the team coached bv Thomas l.ittle. St. Anil’s Saints Register Excellent F ootball Records Four of the five teams spon sored by the St. Ann's Saints finished the 1974 Pop Warner football season with winning records. The farm team won ?>ix. and lost two. the Junior Mighty Mites won six. lost orte. and tied one; the mighty mites won six and lost two; the Pee -Mem II on Til e mH lno thrn. Only the Midgets finished with a losing season winning three and losing five. . On Nov. JO, the Saints hosted three teams from the Midway /Athletic Association of Atlanta. Georgia. They won one of the three games played. The results were the St. Ann's Mighty Mites 14 Atlanta Mighty Mites 7. Atlanta Pee Wees 19 St. Ann’s Pee Wees 6. and The Atlanta Midgets 26 St. Ann's Midgets 0. Some ot the stars for the Saints were running back Bennett Gleaton who also played safety on defense for the Saint's Junior Mighty Mites. Wheelchair Cagers To Play For Pearson Fund The Charlotte Tar Wheels will host wheelchair basket ball teams from thre other Carolina cities for four games this Saturday (Dec. 7) at the West Mecklenburg High School gymnasium. ..Proceeds from the games, which are sponsored by the Civinetles and Key clubs at West Mecklenburg, will bene fit the Tar Wheel basketball team and the Pearson Memorial Scholarship fund at West Mecklenburg High. ..The scholarship is in memory pf the late Charles Pearson. West Mecklenburg English teacher for more than 20 years and senior class adv i sor who died two days before the end of last school year. Dexter Keaster. a six feet two inch 195 pound sophomore from 'North C arolina A & T State Cniversity. won honors, for his outstanding split-end. He lead the conference in pass receiving with 23 receptions lur yards' ma >ffnianr dow ns. Teaman Harold Barnhill and Terry Bellamy, were among the honorable mention ed pla> ers. Howard Cniversity and Morgan State Cniversity dominated the offensive team first team placing five and our players respectively on the team. A & T and North Caro lina Central Cniversity added two each and South Carolina State Cniversity and the Cniversity of Maryland at Eastern Shore (C.MES) had one each. Stars of the offensive first team included quarterback Michael Banks of How ard who completed 84 of 183 passes during the regular season for 1.175 yards and re touch downs. In addition, he aver aged passing 117.5 yards per game. He also led the confer ence in total offense for the second straight year with an average 113.5yards per game. ■ Others included running backs. Robert Hammond of r- —■—— Morgan Slate and James Smith of North C.arolina Central. Hammond made the team for the second year. Hammond won the rushing title for the second straight year with 829 yards in 207 carries for an average of four yards per carry and a game average of 82.9 y ards. Smith rushed for 667 yards in 143 carries for an average of 4.7 yards per carry. Ttglu-end yCilliani Bennett ■ - of A & T caught tS passes for 209 yards while Tight-end Julius Gamble, of Howard was on the receiving end of passes for 142 yards. Gamble and Bennett finished tied for the tight-end position. Flanker Darius McCarthy of South Carolina State caught 12 passes for 239 yards and six touchdowns. ..Gamble made the team at two positions. The all-confer ence point-after touchdown specialist who made the team for the second straight year kicked 27 of 34 extra point attempts and added six field goals to lead the league in ] scoring with 45 points. The team included seven seniors, four juniors, and one Morgan Stale led second team selections with six re presentatives. North Carolina Central gained five spots on the second team. North Carolina A & T four. South C arolina State. Delaware State. Howard, and l MES three each and Delaware two. The league's seniors domin ated the second team with IH representatives compared with three juniors. five sophomores, and two fresh man.
