I I I k“^\ ^\i By Bob Johnson ..Nuff said about Lincoln, Revere, Washington and the likes.- In order to create a better educated awareness of the roles that Blacks have played in history, which contributed to the economy, wealth, and sovereign power of this country today. This week, which is observed throughout this country as “Black History Week", focused more attention to the darker faces of American History. ..Even though contri butions by Blacks have been, is, and will be made daily and there fore should rightfully take their place in the regular annals of American History. .. In view of this fact some individuals and organizations presented some very appropriate affairs. Happening is proud of two of these events. ..The National PHI DELTA KAPPA Soror ity with ROSA GRIER as chairman, sponsored a teachorama at the Greenville Neighborhood Center. The purpose of the teachorama was to inform black children of the contributions and achievements made by Blacks in this country. Children from Chantilly, Oaklawn, and Double Oaks Elementary Schools participated in these classes. JIMMY LOVE, PHILLIP STEELE, and DARRYL JONES were just 3 of the many students who attended. The Sorors of this progressive organization are: HELEN ALEX ANDER, FRANCES WADDELL, KATHRYN WILLIAMS, ETHEL POLK, MATTIE IVEY, DIANNE SCOTT, JOHNSETTA McCLURE, WILLIE POWELL, MARY FLOWE and NELL OXNER. ..The LES AIMES Social Club, in conjunction with the Gaston County Public Library, spon sored “BLACK AWARENESS WEEK” which included art exhibits by JAMES BIGGERS, ROY WOODS, and DOUGLAS SIMMS. Among the week’s list of programs was one given Monday night entitled “Fulfilling America’s Promise.” The following people were participants: MRS. BRENDA FRIDAY, MS. HELEN GOODE, DOT GUTHRIE, JYMI McCLURE, THERON CHOATES, and MRS. AMY NEELY. DIANE HOPKINS, YVONNE GARY, MR. and MRS. DUNN, MILDRED SADLER, REV. SCOTT, FERMAN DAVIS, LORETTA GILL, ELLA Me CLINTON, and MR. and MRS. HAMILTON were seen in the audience. By the way, MRS. HAMI LTON received an outstanding educator award lor ner "untiring work in the community.” ..MR. and MRS. ARTHUR GARY of 2420 LaSalle Street will celebrate their Golden Anni versary (50 years) on Saturday, March 8. ..MR. and MRS. GARY have gifted our community with seven lovely daughters and two sons. There remains an off-spring of thirty grandchildren and four great grandchildren. ..Big Daddy and Big Mama, as they are addressed by all members of the family, have resided in Charlotte since arriving from Green ville, South Carolina more than half of a century ago. He is 67 years old and she is 65. . .They will repeat their vows at the First Baptist Church, 1020 South Church Street, where they are members. Following, will be a reception held at the Excellsior Club on Beatties Ford Road. ..A big welcome back home is in order for REGINALD "DUCK” SCALES and CHARLES and BETTY JEFFERS, who spent some time last week in New Orleans at the Mardis Gras. .. MABEL WILLIAMS of Dawnshire Drive host ed a Hawaiian Luau last Saturday night. The affair which featured Polynesian Rice, all sorts of Hawaiian food and Hawaiian music was attended by KATHY STARR. HAZEL KOONTZ. DIANE SPENCE, JACKIE PETERS. LIBBY WEBBER. AILENE NEELY. DEBORAH DAWKINS, and DORIS JOHNSON. The hostess, wn» was auirea in a neauiuui iiawananoutm, showed films of her stay in Hawaii amid decorations and pictures of many of the Hawa iian Islands. ..A baby shower was given recently for MRS. MINNIE ALLISON. The shower, which had as its basic color scheme green and yellow, was hosted by EDNA JOHNSON and PAULA MASON. BRENDA HOOVER was seen playing Pokeno and other baby games. Along with BRENDA were: EDWIN A HAYES, ELLOREE ERWIN. ALVINE ROBINSON, DEE DOLBY, HATTIE AUDREY. MARY ARNOLD. CARO LYN EVANS. ROBERTA FORD, BETTY MC DOWELL, JOSEPHINE ALLISON, LINNER MITCHELL. Smith I'niversity hus recently initiated a fund raising project to purchase 100 new hand uniforms for the school term 1975-76. According to Marvin Davenport, the JCSt' hand director, this effort was spurred by the current band members and has been accepted as a total school community project. . Dr. Wilbert Greenfield ex plained the need for new uni forms in these words: “Tradi tionally, in schools and colleges across the nation, the most overt signs of school spirit are demonstrated bv marching bands and the drum majors and majorettes which accompany them in parades and at athletic events. This is an important element in the life of an institution. Not only does it spur athletic competi tion. It also tends to bind together people of common interest in mutual support of team and school." . .The students are being join ed in their support of the hand uniform drive by the admini slralive. faculty and staff. Signs displayed on the campus arc printed with such slogans as: "(live a lloot! Huy a Suit" and "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is - Support Your Hand Uniform Drive." ..Local businesses, organiza tions. alumni and friends of the University have been ask ed to participate in the drive which will culminate next June. "With the help of these groups, the entire Charlotte community can feel the pride and exhilaration that a well dressed band stimulates. "I)r. Greenfield asserted. .
