..Nuff said about Lincoln, Revere, Washington
and the likes.- In order to create a better
educated awareness of the roles that Blacks
have played in history, which contributed to the
economy, wealth, and sovereign power of this

throughout this country as “Black History

\ J. C. Smith Initiates
! Fund-Raising Project
Johnson C. Smith I'niversity
hus recently initiated a fund
raising project to purchase 100
new hand uniforms for the
school term 1975-76. According
to Marvin Davenport, the
JCSt' hand director, this
effort was spurred by the
current band members and
has been accepted as a total
school community project.
. Dr. Wilbert Greenfield ex
plained the need for new uni
forms in these words: “Tradi
tionally, in schools and
colleges across the nation, the
most overt signs of school
spirit are demonstrated bv
marching bands and the drum
majors and majorettes which
accompany them in parades
and at athletic events. This is
an important element in the
life of an institution. Not only
does it spur athletic competi
tion. It also tends to bind
together people of common
interest in mutual support of
team and school."
. .The students are being join
ed in their support of the hand
uniform drive by the admini
slralive. faculty and staff.
Signs displayed on the campus
arc printed with such slogans
as: "(live a lloot! Huy a Suit"
and "Put Your Money Where
Your Mouth Is - Support Your
Hand Uniform Drive."
..Local businesses, organiza
tions. alumni and friends of
the University have been ask
ed to participate in the drive
which will culminate next
June. "With the help of these
groups, the entire Charlotte
community can feel the pride
and exhilaration that a well
dressed band stimulates. "I)r.
Greenfield asserted.
. With new attire, the band
expects to expand its member
ship and to offer more public
programs and concerts in the
future.
