30 Schools Get Safety Awards ..ThirU Charlotte.Mecklen burg ffhools have been In cluded on the latest National School Safety Honor Roll and 31 schools have qualified for Perfect Safety Awards in the Green Pennant Traffic Safety Program for the 1973-74 school ~ 7**T~—Twenty-tinee—schools won both awards. * • Begun in 1944. the Honor Roll program is the National Safety Council's way of recog nlzlng Jobs well done in school safety education. Partici pation enables each school to analyze objedtftely its safety activities. , By means of a graduated schedule of re quirements, schools are en couraged to upgrade their own safety education programs yearly. . Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, in descending order according to the number of consecutive years on the Honor Roll, are: ..Cotswold (18). Oakhurst (16). Ashley Park (15). Safety Program, sponsored by General Motors, is aimed at making every student con scious of the need for traffic safety. It also provides recog nition to schools with out standing traffice safety re cords. . .Schools participating in the program earn the right to fly a pennant rrom their flagsUff by completing a 30-day acci dent-free period. Pennants continue to fly as long as there are no accidents. If one occurs, the pennant is with drawn and displayed inside for a 30-day safety review period. ..Perfect safety awards, are presented to schools with 100 per cent accident-free records for a school year. Silhouette Club Entertains With “Champagne Gala” . . .The Silhouette Club of Kap ft pa Alpha Psl Fraternity held a I "Champagne-Luncheon-Card Gala” recently at the Ramada Inn on East Independence Bo ulevard. ..The 11:30 a. m. event was held to provide entertainment for friends of the Silhouettes, said Mrs. Dorothy Burgess Swann who was one of the 25 members of the club serving aa a hostess for the guests. Silhouettes are wives of Ka ppa Alpha Psl Fraternity members. ..The event was planned by Mrs. Patricia Dowdy and Mrs. Christine Gadsen who are chairman and co-chairman of the 8oclal Committee. Smith University Kappa Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority paused last week to celebrate their annual “Finer Womanhood Week" and renewed their pledge of rededication of each sister to the ideals and principles upon which the sorority was found ed. ..Among the honored found ers is a native Charloltean, Ms. Pearl Neal one of five national founders who are all still living and active. Of the five local founders, only Ms. UNCC To Display Dilland Art Collection ..The Creative Arts Depart ment of the University of No rth Carolina at Charlotte has currently on display “Selected Pieces of the Dilland Collec tion” from the Weatherspoon Gallery at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. ..The exhibit is located in the Main Gallery of Rowe Fine Arts Building on the UNCC CAMPUS. ✓ ..The 30 pieces represent all kinds of drawing styles in various media Including India ink, charcoal, chalk, water color and graphite. The exhi bit Is centered exclusively a round the human form and all pieces are by 20th Century American Artists from all ov er the United States. . .Walter Soellner, Gallery Di rector at UNCC, says that the pieces range from precision realism which Is really in vogue now to IMO’s abstract expressionism. “All the draw ings, he added, were done In the 1960’s and 1970's. ..The Main Gallery is open from 8-5 on weekdays and 2-5 on weekends. The local founders of the Kappa Chap ter, Ms. Helen Kibler, Ms. Melverie Janies Warren and Ms. Sadie Crawford, were honored also. ..In addition to the recogni tion of their founders, the Zetas participated in other activities last week including the Zeta Involvement Pro gram (ZIP). ..This program involves Jun ior and senior high school girts called “ZIP” girls and recent ly the sisters sisters and the "ZIP" glrlswiere involved in a self-awareness workshop on loyalty conducted by Mrs. Anne McQuiston, the director of Christian Education at third t Presbyterian Church who also , works with the city’s Mental Health Clinic. ..The celebration festivities also included a Fun Night for all graduate and undergradu ate active and inactive sisters. Ms. Jane Reid served as the Fun Night chairman. ..A social hour included pledge renewals and the reve lation of Secret Pals or Heart Sisters. ..A worship conducted at Clinton Chapel A.M.E. Zion was highlighted by the ap pearance of Dr. H. C. Hunni cutt as the guest speaker. Ms. Philistine Dunlap presided over the service. ..The group wishes to thank the regular minister, the Rev. The Special award for the year was a plaque presented to Ms. Madie Simpson by the chairman of the awards committee, Ms. Almetto Ale xander. .. In 1972, she was a warded the certificate of recognition as the outstanding Black Woman of the year in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area by the Opportunities Industralizatlon Center, Inc.
