State Traffic
Accidents
uecreases
“The percentage of traffic
mishaps reported in North
Carolina for 1974, decreased
compared with that of the
previous year. Commissioner
of Motor Vehicles Jake Alex
ander announced today. "Pre
liminary data shows a 3.4
percent drop in accidents
from 1973”, he said.
• •Traffic accidents dwindled
in all months during 1974, as
opposed to those of 1973, ex
cept for the holiday and vaca
tion months of August, Sept
ember, November and
December.
..According to the 1974 data,
injury accidents declined 4.1
percent. Accidents Involving
faUlities were the lowest in
ten years. They were 17 J per
cent less than the 1973 figure.
..Pedestrian mishaps showed
a • percent dgcrease while
pedestrian faUlities fell 17
percent.
..On the increase from 1973
were bicycle accidents. They
rose a tremendous 30 percent
during the 1974 period and
posed definite concern among
safety administrators.
..Of reported motorcycle
accidents, there was an 8 per
cent rise, but motorcycle faU
lities decreased hy 14 percent.

Nancy Hough is this week's
Charlotte Post Beauty. The
(3-year-old Miss Hough is the
daughter of Mrs. Mildred
Hough of 2028 Renner St.
..She is 5-feet-8 inches tall,
measures 34-23-35 and weighs
115 pounds.
..Nancy is an 8th grader at
Hawthorne Junior High
School. At Hawthorne she is a
member of the Drill Team,
School Newspaper, and a
member of the school Zoning
Plan.
.. Miss Hough was recently
named "Miss Sweetheart
Queen” of Hawthorne Junior
High. She was chosen as a
result of a tie breaker contest.
She was tied for the honor with
Miss Barbara Gladden. The
tie was broken by voting and
Our Beauty came out on top.
.. Nancy attends Wilson
Heights Church of God. Rev.
Odell Beasley is the pastor.
She is sn usher, sings on the
choir, and Is secretary for the
youth organisation.
..Our Beauty would like to
become a model in the future.
If she doesn’t make it as a
model she would like to go into
acrobatics. 8he also has hopes
of becoming a member of
Belk’s Teen Board.
..Miss Hough has as her
hobbies swimming, gymnast
ics, and playing the piano. The

came from her mother. She
has been playing the piano for
5 years now and says she
really enjoys it. Her piano
instructor is Mrs. Blanche
Oliver. “She's really good,
stated Nancy. She has a lot of
patience and is very under
standing."
..Miss Hough is born under
the sign of Gemini. She des
cribes herself as liking people,
loving all kinds of outdoor
activities and most of all crazy
about clothes.
..When asked if she had to be
another person for one day,
who would that person be, our
beauty replied Latoya Jack
son. "I would just love having
all those famous brothers,
being around them, and just
being a part of their busy
lives. Not being her, one day I
would just like to meet them
and spend a day getting to
really know “The Jackson 5”.
..Jimmy (J.J) Walker is
Nancy’s favorite star. “He is
so funny, giggled Miss Hough.
He is really into things that
are happening today. He
makes young people feel that
they to can make it to the top if
they try.”
.. There is no one special in the
life of our beauty. "I'm only 13
years old and I feel there Is
plenty of time for that some
one special. When I become 16
I hope to start looking and
maybe I will find a real nice
guy.”

The Mecklenburg County
Personnel Office is still taking
applications for several public
service jobs that have been
made available through fed
eral funding.
.. A spokesman for the depart
ment said today that there has
been some difficulty in finding
enough qualified applicants
for the following jobs:
..Seven security patrol oftt
cers
. .Four microfilm operators
..Ten Social Services eligibl
ity specialists
..To qualify for one of these
jobs, a citizen must have been
unemployed for at least 30
days and he must live ouside
the City of Charlotte. These
are guidelines set by the fed
eral government and they
apply to applicants for jobs
funded through the Compre

Government has received
funding recently for 34 Title VI
CETA positions, and there has
also been funding for 11 jobs
through the Public Employ
ment Program (PEP Tem
porary). Both federal pro
grams provide local funding
for jobs for unemployed per
sons. Several of the CETA
funded jobs in addition to
those listed above, are still
open and applications are
being taken by the Personnel
Office.

tion of Education (N'CAE).

In 1918. he was an elemen
tary school teacher in the
elementary school system. In
1954. he was principal of Mor
gan Klrmenlury School and in
1957. he became principal of
l.inroln Heights School, and in
the summer of 19(5.5. he was
director of the federally fund
ed Head Start program for the
county.
He also served on the Mason
committee for the merger
between the N'CAE and the
North Carolina Teachers
Association. He was also on
the Board of Directors of the
NCTA. In 19(59 he became the
administrative assistant Per
sonnel for the local system
and in 1974 he moved to his
present position.
He is a member of Omega
Psi Fraternity.

sanctuary, and 26-room edu

contains a youth hut and a
150-seat Fellowship Hall. It
