Smith Drug Education Team, MOD, attended for two weeks recent ly the United States Office of Education, Southeast Region al Training Center in Miami. Florida under the "Help Communities Help Them selves" program. .."The Center provided the team with skills which enables them to return to their comm unities to assess their needs, mobilize their community re sources. and develop and ad minister a coordinated community program for res ponding to these needs." said JCSU Counselor Ronald Swann. ..The learn on the Florida excursion included two staff members and five student re presentatives who represent ed the areas of Education. Counseling, Student Govern- ' ment, Religion, Student Life, Commuter Life, and Fratern ities. ..Cleveland James, the assis tant director, of the Student Life Program said that the conference helped him "to dis tinguish the dichotomy of the theoretical and reality side of drug abuse." .."Valuable information was passed along as far as statistics and sharing of var ious Ideas within existing in stitutions within the country." said Duane Sevillian, a mem ber of the Student Govern ment Association, and the Student Christian Association. ..Jacquelyn Wilson, an On Campus Student said that she established a general aware ness uf drugs and the develop ment of .drugs through the years and how they are re lated to life. * .."The center provides a humanistic approach to drug education by placing empha sis on an individuals' values and attitudes on the drug question," said Ronald Swann, the campus coordina tor of the team. . . Leslie Kgleston. an off campus student, said that "the center explains the techniques for having a suc cessful and effective drug program that enables the college student and commun ity to be able to face reality." . ."Wle saw the development of an institution whose goals are to show a sort of light In the problem of drugs being used excessively.
