According to Miss Koesjan, all of Charlotte-Mecklen burg's more than 37,000 ele mentary students, some 10,000 junior high school students and more than 5,000 senior high students are involved in local public school music pro gram. ..The CMS performing arts program, which was born in the early 1900’s with the em ployment of one "singing teacher,” now boasts more than 120 certified vocal and instrumental music teachers, she said. ..In the elementary schools, all students have one 30-min ute music lesson per .week with a music teacher. Miss Koesjan said. On other days, classroom teachers carry on some music lessons appropri ate to their own skill and training.
