Jaycees Sponsor V Reading Program An organization, designed to simulate a child to exper ience the "pleasures found in books and to encourage him to develop and follow his own interests through books which he selects" is being formed in the city. Heading Is Fundamental <HIF> in Charlotte Mecklen burg is a local project spon sored by the Charlotte Jay cees. Fairview Women s Club, the American Association of University Women (AAL'W) and other interested groups. Peterson Sociology Award ..Miss Lola Anise Key, daughter of Mrs. Anise McGee of 700 Concordia Avenue, was the happy recipient of the J.D. Peterson Sociology Award given recently by Barber Scotia College, Concord. ..The J. D. Peterson Socio logy Award is given annually during Honors and Awards Convocation, held at Barber Scotia in February. It is a cash award given to the junior with the highest academic average with a major in Sociology. ..During the honors and awards convocation. Miss Key was recognized for being se lected to Who's Who Among Students in American Univer sities and Colleges, the Dean's List and the Honor Roll. ..She was recently elected to reign as Miss Barber-Scotia College, 1975-76. She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and will be representing her campus chapter at the National Con vention to be held in Seattle, Washington during the month of August. ..Anise is a member of var ious other organizations on the Barber-Scotia Campus, they are the Barber-Scotia Drama Guild, President of Omega Pearls of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the College Vespers and Program Committee. ..She is also an active mem ber of South Tryon Street Presbyterian Church where Kev. Pro gram Assistant with the Meck lenburg 4-11 and Youth Office at 1501 I-K5 North, conducted a 5-day Bicycle Safety Pro gram at Derita Community Center last week. lie was assisted in the effort by I II Junior Leader Michael Martin, who lectured, and 4-11 Leader \ irginia Morrow, who provided refreshments of pop corn, peanuts, mints, punch, etc. for the 29 kids from the Derita Area who participated in the event. . .The Bicycle Safety Program was held from 2 until 5 P.M. and trophies were awarded to the w inners of the Bicycle Kodeo that climaxed the pro gram. The first day's activities consisted of a presentation, by Taylor and Martin, of the his tory of the bicy cle. ..) ing the second day's acti- ies the leaders lectured TV Sprit's To Featun Siimmpr School • The Charlottc-Mecklenburg Schools' monthly television series "Your Schools In Action" will feature regular summer school on the Tues day. March 25 program. The program will be tele cast at 8 p.m: on WTVL Chan nel 42, the educational tele vision station of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. on Traffic Regulations and Bicycle Safety rules. Taylor and Martin also inspected the kids bikes, registered the bikes with the Police Depart ment. and made minor repairs and adjustments on the parti cipants hikes. The Bicycle Rodeo was held the third day with the Derita Area youth competing in the categories of bike balancing through a course of traffic cones. the giving of hand sig nals. mounting and dismount ing, an obstacle course, speed racing, pedaling and hrakeing ability, and passing a parked car. The entrants also had to take a test from the Bicycle Mannual and write a para graph on a subject pertaining to a bake of bicycling. They were judged on their performance . in all these areas, according to Taylor. ..Allen Davis. 10. won the event with a total of 261 points. ? which Taylor said was a "per fect" score. Ten-year-old Davis was awarded a trophv for his performance. Fitzgerald McCauley and Debbie Morrow tied for Se cond Place with a point score'' of 259: they also received trophies. ..Faye Morrow won Third Place with a score of 252 and was awarded a Blue Ribhon. as was l.avon Alexander who placed fourth with a score of 250. '..“This was the first time we held a Rodeo and Safetx Pro gram in Derita”. said Taylor, xxho has held similiar pro grams in Cornelius. X. C. and xxill hold one in Iredell County this Thursday . The kids parti cipating in the program gen erally range from x to 12 years of age. The 23-year-old Taylor has been xxith the 4-11 and Youth Office since January 2 of this year.
