His mother Shirley Tillman gave him a vei-y swell party in honor of his 13th birthday. Highlighting the calendar was a well attended I tournament finals, Friday night. This basketball - B game pitted The Smart Shop against Groove Phi $ Groove. The 34 points that leading scorer Tony f, Byers, formerly a Wake Forest standout, pump ed in enabled the Smart Shop to come out victorious 111-94. Joe Powell was the leading scorer for the losers with 31 points. . The following players, standouts for their individual teams, were selected for the all tournament five, Willie Joplin, Tony Byers, j Joseph Powell, Ellis Allen and Louis Jefferies. jjs . .Saturday night the D. C. Colts played two games against the Y.M.C.A’s All-Star team coached by Hiram Jones. The young Colts outscored the young All-Stars 75-48. Michael J C oles and Eric Clark led the winners with 14 i points each. Tyrone Carr had 22 points for the "Y”. in the adult game, however, the All-Stars scored a 135-125 victory over the Washington team. Harry Davis scored 25 points to lead the All-Stars scorers followed by George Cooper with 22. Ledbetter, advisor to the Alpha Kappa Sigma Chapter Johnson C. Smith University attended the event held at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va. from March 13 through 15. ■ The convention delegates were outstanding black scho lars from colleges throughout the nation. And while at the convention, they engaged in social and intellectual activ ities that were "enjoyable and enlightening." ..Major speeches by promin ent Afro-Americans focused on the problems of society andi the scholar's role in solving them. The keynote speaker was Dr. Tillman Cothran, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Western Michigan University. The convocation speaker was r* mm ymm MRS. BESSIE LEDBETTER ...Alpha Kappa Sigma advisor Major General Frederic E. Davison, the past command er of the U.S. Army’s Military District of Washington, D.C." The banquet speaker was Dr. Thomas M. Law. the President of Penn Valley Students May Qualify For Free Lunches ..Children who are unable to pay the full cost of a school lunch may qualify for free and reduced price lunches, acco rding to Ralph Eaton. School Food Services Director for the Department of Public Instru ction. ...According to Eaton, appli cation for the free or reduced price benefits of the National School Lunch Program are usually made in the fall. How ever, in view of the hardships facing families since that lime due to inflation and unem ployment, the announcement is again being made. ..Children from families whose income levels are low may be eligible, as well as families with hardship con ditions due to high medical costs, expenses, shelter costs in excess of 30 percent of income, and temporary loss of income from lay-offs, short time or other employment .conditions. The Resolutions Committee, on which Mrs. Ledbetter ser ved, submitted in its report two resolutions of general in terest. ..One was for forwarding a telegram to President Ford expressing the group's oppos ition to the appropriation of funds for Cambodia. * ..The other was for express ing the opposition of the pro posed increase in food stamp costs.
