UNCF Drive
Nets Record
$11 Million
New Y ork - An all-time high
record of $11.9-million was
raiseo in the 1974 Annual Cam
paign conducted by the United
Negro College Fund. It sur
passed the 1973 total of $10.5
million by almost a million
and a half dollars.
Thomas A. Murphy, UNCF
National Campaign Chair
man called the total "a truly
remarkable accomplishment
in the light of today’s
economy.”
Mr. Murphy said that inten
sive staff training carried out
in management workshops
throughout the year paid off in
the kind of aggressive, effi
cient leadership needed to
carry the drive to the record
total.
"Corporate solicitation,
under the direction of A. Dean
Swift, especially should be
commended for its work,” Mr.
Murphy said. American busi
nesses contributed $4.4-mll
lion to the UNCF drive in 1974,
also a record amount. Some
5,500 corporations were
among those contributing.
.. Mr. Murphy, the board
chairman of General Motors
Corp., said he was also “Ex>
tremely pleased” at the show
ing of the foundations fund
raising effort which increased
in total $63,630 over last year
at a time when foundaitons
were cutting back on their
grants. Foundations contribu
ted $l.9-million to the 1974
total.
. Mr. Murphy said it was
“very significant” to note the
largest gift ever received
from an organization came
from a black organization.
The Links, Inc., a national
women’s group. The Links
presented the Fund with a
check for $132,00 at a luncheon
in Washington, D. C. last
summer.
Other areas which showed
substantial gains in the drive
included: colleges and univer
sities, $879,637, up from
548,646; organized groups.
$672,925. up from $372,106;
municipal employees, $66,505.
_, op from $38,027; and Poet
Office Employees, 931,323, up
from $21,786. Union contribu
tions increased almost 7S per
cent, from $20,997 to 934,071.
Largest corporate donors to
the UNCF were: General
Motors, $300,000; IBM
9152,800; Bell System.
987,775; Sears Roebuck
Foundation, $85,000; Johnson
Publishing Company, Inc.
(through the Ebony Fashion
Fare) $78,264; Olin Corp.
Charitable Trust, $62,275;.
Ford Motor Co. Fund, 960,000
and U. 8. Steel Foundation,
960,000.
