soorii DCflt BY BILL JOHNSON TELLING IT LIKE IT IS The new Black college football season ushers in rather quietly and without much fanfare this weekend. North Carolina A&T has a big opener with Virginia Union in Greensboro Saturday night and Morgan State is hosting Virginia State in Baltimore Saturday afternoon. However, the National Black football spotlight will be focused on New Orleans where Gramb ling will clash with Alcorn before 81,000 rabid fans in the Superdome. Johnson C. Smith will move on the scene a week from Saturday when the Golden Bulls open their 1975 campaign with hopes of bettering their 4-7 ronnrH nf locf vnor The first disappointment of the new season came with the news that South Carolina State College, a solid choice to repeat as champions of the MEAC, had to cancel its season opener with Gardner-Webb because of a viral infection. The college officials are mum about future games. The entire squad is being tested to further determine the presence of the virus and the physical condition of those who have experien ced difficulty as a result of it. The prediction here is that it's going to be an interesting year, with three teams rated to battle to the finish in the CIAA and four teams are expected to wage a merry fight to the wire in the MEAC. . Howard University is the popular choice to unseat South Carolina State in the MEAC and Norfolk State is everybody's choice to success fully defend its CIAA title. However, this report er likes Livingstone to win the CIAA and either South Carolina State or Morgan to cop the MEAC. The Early impression here is that the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University will have to undergo considerable improvement before they can assume championship class. Coach Eddie McGirt is beginning his 18th season in an aura of unpredictability. BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT the surest way to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm. Ken Koontz, the smooth talking WBTV news caster, will again handle the public address system for all Johnson C. Smith University home football games. It will be the fourth straieht vear that the 1972 graduate of the University has worked the mike for the Golden Bulls. Look for the top two teams in the Mecklenburg County Semipro Baseball League to clash with the first and second teams in the Triple County League either next Saturday or Sunday. The final decision rest upon the outcome of the battle for the Triple County League champion ship between the Charlotte Chiefs and the Kings Mountain A's. The two teams are currently locked in the best of three game series with a victory apiece. The final game will be played at the Harding High School Athletic Field Saturday -fi αιννι uwii. Plans call for the Morris Field Rangers, 1975 champions of the MCL, to take on the champions of the TCL and for the Charlotte Hawks, third-place winners in the Mecklenburg County circuit, to challenge the second-place winners in the Triple County. The doubleheader will be held at Griffith Park. Married men may have betterlialves but bachelors have better quarters. Cal Irvin, one-time basketball coach at John son C. Smith and presently athletic director at North Carolina A&T, has been selected to serve on the Selection Committe of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association. ·· 10·· Did You Know that Shaw University will have ■ a new head football coach this fall?
