WBTV To Showcase David Thompson Sunday Night On Sunday Octber 5, at 8 p.m.,- David Thompson will step onto a basketball court for the first time as a profes sional player, and when he does, WBTV will be there live, and so will you. His talents as a pro will be showcased for the first time in a game pitting the Denver Nuggets against the New Orleans Jazz. Channel 3 will bring you all the action and WBTV’s Jim Thacker, along with Billy Packer wil_l do play-by-play and.color, res pectively. Prior to the game, at 7:30 p.m., WBTV will present a very special look at the amaz ing career of David Thtfmp son, the best all around bas ketball player this area has ever produced. The special broadcast, titled, “DAVID THOMPSON-MR. BASKET BALL," will feature high lights of the three time ALL American's super career thus far, from his junior high days, to his years of development at Crest High in Shelby, to his years of national leadership at North Carolina State Univer sity. “DAVID THOMPSON MR. BASKETBALL” will also contain extensive comments by David, interviews with his mom and dad and interviews with many of his coaches and friends. Jim Thacker of Channel 3 has known David and his family for some time now, so the viewers will probably get to see a different side of Thompson than they’re accustomed to seeing. Not only will we see Dave as stellar athlete, we'll also see him as he is off-court, as a person who views his talents. with a unique attitude. Join WBTV for “DAVID THOMPSON-MR. J. - Simpson is doing to the NFL Randolph Canty Joips Allstate ^Insurance Firm Randolph Canty has recent ly completed the Allstate Sales training course which was held for two weeks at the Allstate Southern Zone head quarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Canty is a graduate of York Road High School in Char lotte. He has been with All state since August 11, 1975. Canty will work at the Sears store located in Southpark Shopping Center at 4400 Sha ron Road in Charlotte. The new Allstate agent is offering a full circle of protection in cluding Homeowners, Life, Business Insurance and Motor Club. He is also a representa tive of Allstate Finance. Allstate is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck and Company. this season. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cuthbertson registered three touchdowns Saturday in! leading the Plaza Junior “Mighty Mites" to a one-sided 41-0 victory over Winterfield. “He .(Cuthbertson) is one of the test I’ve coached," praise Chuc - >ennington “However, this was far from being a one man’s show,” he added, point ing out outstanding play by fullback Gary Phillips, half back Raymond “Duke” Gass away and the tremendous de fense led by Mark Allen and Jamie Owens. Pennington also had praise for the blocking of Kenny Hulsey and Jerry Jeringan. "Tim Propst, our quarter back, called an excellent game for us,” he concluded. Cuthbertson has now scored 11 touchdowns in only three appearances. He ran for 183 yards with nine carries Satur day, including scoring trips of 60 and 49 yards and a pass interception of 45 yards. However, according to Pennington, the team’s most exciting run of the game was turned in by Gassaway, who broke several tackles enroute to a touchdown from 15 yards away. The undefeated "Mighty Mite," who has yielded only one first down on defense while holding their opponents scoreless, will meet West Der ita in Derita Saturday night, starting at 7 o'clock. Zion Church, was guest speaker at the First Annual Men’s Day Program of Jonesville A.M.E. Zion Church, 5727 Providence Road West, last Sunday at 11. The program was attended by a near capacity crowd of approximately 180 persons who heard Mr. Long speak on the subject of “Man Respond ing to Responsibilities." Rev, Clinton L. Wilcox is pastor of the 100-member chuch congregation that was Mr. Louie B. Davis was Program Chairman for the occasion and was assisted by Mr. James Stitt. The September 28th affair raised $960 for the church’s General Treasury and was headed by James Mungo, President; John A.
