TELLING IT LIKE IT IS ..
The wonders of the world of sports continue to
amaze. —
Imagine while the Juice is on the loose, making
noise on the football field and doing extremely
well in movies, in television and in business, our
idol Muhammad Ali is fooling around in Manila
with a beautiful babe.
Since this is being written prior to Tuesday
night’s heavyweight championship fight, it
seems to us that it would be an excellent idea to
sign the jilted boyfriend to fight the great one
next.
Three weeks ago none ot tne experts around
the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
would give a counterfeit buck for Johnson C.
Smith’s chances in the conference’s football
championship race this season. Now, would you
believe the Golden Bulls are chasing Norfolk
State for the conference top spot, only a few
percentage points in back of Livingstone and
Virginia Union?
It would appear that the only thing that’s going
to stop North Mecklenburg’s football team this
fall will be graduation. The College scouts, who
droll easily anyway, are raving over several of
the Vikings, including Grover Rivens, Lewis
Woodley, Donnie Hall and Sherwood Rankin.
We didn’t fully realize just how good Matt
Snorton was until Saturday night. The substitute
announcer on the Hornets broadcast just didn’t
cut it.
xne^ampung people - tnose wno cnose to hawk
their bread on wild guesses rather than earn it at
the two bucks a day going rate, are laying their
cash on JohnsonC. Smith against North Carolina
A&T in that big one in Greensboro Saturday
night.
Henry Aaron, who may be the next Black to get
a job as manager of a major league baseball
club, has gone to bat for aging Blacks. In doing
so, the Hammer hit a homerun for mankind,
, urging the President and the unions across the
country to build jobs, and life qualify for the
Black aged.
We’ve been told that sports fans across the city
are missing a real treat by not attending the
Plaza Juniors “Mighty Mites” football games on
• Saturday. Little Kenny Cuthbertson is already
- being placed in such great company as Haywood
Stevenson, Jimmy Kirkpatrick and Cleatus
Horton, recognized as the greatest football
players ever to trot out on a local gridiron.
Cuthbertson averaged slightly more than 20
yards per carry in gaining 183 yards with only
nine trips last week. He’s racked 11 touchdowns
in his first three games. He hasn’t peaked yet,
local observers say.
Sinclair Colbert a'nd Raymond Perry have
been selected as captains of the North Carolina
A&T State University basketball team. Colbert is
a 6’10” senior, Perry is a 6’0” guard.
South Carolina State, Florida A&M and John
son C. Smith slipped the ole crystal ball a mickey
with surprised victories last week, thus lowering
our guess-pert batting average to .812 with 13
rights and only 3 misses in 16 games this season.
This week we like Fayetteville to Maul More
house, Norfolk State to whip Winston-Salem
State and Shaw to bounce back against Knox
ville. Hampton should continue to make life
miserable for Elizabeth City. It’s foolhardy to
make a selection in a rivalry as intense as
Johnson C. Smith and A&T, but here goes. It will
be the Aggies by a close margin. Morgan will
take Central and Alcorn will edge S. C. State and
Howard will stop Florida A&M. Delaware State
will have an easy time Maryland-ES.

Junior High in the eighth and
ninth grades and halfback at
South in the 10th. A change in
boundaries sent him to Olym
pic in the Uth and 12th.
His secret? “You have to
pick the right holes," said the
star who thinks Olympic has a
good chance to finish high in
the league.
“But every team keys on
me,” he smiled.
Woodley has played his pre
sent position for five years, at
Ranson and on North’s var
sity.
He was All^County in 1974
and feels that his “North team
should go undefeated."
“Studying and listening to
the radio,” are the favorite
hobbies of Rhett who wants to
major in Psychology in
college wun an ammuon 01
being a professional football
player or a social worker and
considers “The Exorcist” as
the best book he'has read.
“The movie was kind of upset
ting however," he said.
Rhett’s biggest sports thrill
was breaking his own kickoff
return record while Woodley’s
was being named defensive
lineman of the year for the
Vikings in 1974.
The potential Shrine Bowl
candidate, Woodley, lists Too
Tall Jones of the Dallas Cow
boys as his favorite pro star
and admires his parents more
Jhan anyone because they en
courage his sporting endea
vor^
0. J. Simpson is RheTt’s
favorite star because ‘‘to me
he is about the best back to be
produced since Jim Brown.”
When he's not running
track, he runs the 100 in 9.9
and long jumps at 22 feet eight
inches, or serving as captain
of the football team, Rhett
serves as a member of Olym
pic's Senior Executive Council
‘‘planning activities for his
senior class.”
Woodley wrestles, he was
16-4 last year, throws the shot
put during track season and
drives Bus 416 to Huntersville
Elementary School.
Other stars last weekend
were:
North’s sensational half
back Grover Rivens who
rushed for 98 yards in keeping
his two touchdowns per game
average intact.
North halfback Francis
Forney rushed for 97 yards in
eight carries scoring once.
West Charlotte halfback
David Wavmer rushed for 93
yards and one touchdown in
the Lion's 31 to 7 defeat.
Chuck Barcliff, Garinger
fullback, scored two touch
. downs and rushed for 180
yards in Garinger's 14 to 0
victory over Independence.
North tackle, Sherwood
Rankin forced Lion’s quarter
back Bobby Hanes to fumble
on the Lion 19 and Lewis
Woodley grabbed the loose
ball for a touchdown.
Steve Hopper, South, ran a
36 yard fumble recovery back
for one of the two Sabre touch
downs.
Olympic sophomore,
quarterback, Rocky White
engineered his team's first
victory with good passing and
short yardage runs that
resulted in first down after
first down.
Wiley Fox, Olympic, kicked
two extra points and a 33 yard
field goal and caught a touch
down pass for 11 of Olympic's
points.
