To Hear
Harvey Gantt
On Thursday, (January 15),
the Hon. Harvey B. Gantt,
Charlotte City Councilman,
will be the featured speaker at
a celebration of brotherhood
to be held at Christ The King
Center, 425 East 17th Street, at
7:30 P.M.
. This will be the second
annual observance of the late
Dr. Martin Luther King's
birthday at Christ The King
Center.
Mr. Gantt is a partner in the
Architectural firm of Gantt
Huberman Associates, Char
lotte. He was appointed last
year to fill a vacancy on the
City Council and was elected
in November with the second
highest vote total among four
teen candidates. He will speak
on the topic, "The Struggle
For Justice Today."
The celebration of Brother
hood will also include eyewit
ness accounts and film footage
of Dr. King's marches to
Montgomery, Alabama and
Washington, D C.; short read
ings on social justice from the
Old Testament Prophets; and
will close with a brief service
of rededication to the cause of
freedom for those attending. A
free-will offering will benefit
the social outreach work of
Christ The King Center.
Christ The King Center,
established in 1968, is an inner
city ministry sponsored by the
Episcopal Diocese of North
Carolina. The Rev. James H.
'B. Kenyon is priest-director.

roots community efforts. He is
best remembered for his or
ganizing efforts to stop the
widening of LaSalle Street.
If the transfer of Blevins is
upheld, he contends that his
agency will effectively
"muzzle" him as a commun
ity organizer. Before the
change in assignment, Blevins
had a free range in commun
ity organizing, but if he is
moved, he will have to get
prior approval to distribute
leaflets and prior approval to
select issues on which he will
work in his community group
