i hurt h Veics Briefs Silver Mount BaPtist Church To Celebrate Women’s Day Here Sunda v secretary treasurer of The Woman's Baptist State Con vention of North Carolina, will be the guest speaker at Silver Mount Baptist Church Sunday morning in the grand celebra tion of annual Woman's Day. Mrs. Horne is considered an outstanding mission worker who has led the Baptist wo men of the state toward high and noble goals. She is well known across the state and throughout the nation as a great leader among the Bap tist family. According to Rev. William Lee, pastor of Silver Mount, "she is a dynmic speaker with dreams and visions of what the Baptist women of North Carolina can do in reaching lost souls and what can be accomplished. She has been very helpful in setting apart a place that will be known as a great Baptist land mark for many generations to come.” Rev. Lee explained, "one of the major objectives of the Women’s Baptist Convention is to finish the plans on a beautiful 66 acres of land at I aurel Hill, N. C., known as the Baptist Assembly. This plot of land was given to the Women Baptist Convention by the present president of the General Baptist Convention. Dr. J. J. Johnson.” All ladies of Silver Mount will be dressed in white with a red flower. The annual pro gram will begin at 10 a.m. with the general Sunday School session. The Woman's Day program will continue at 11 o’clock. Some of the ladies who will take part in the special cele bration are: Mrs. Annie Dixon, president of the Mission Department; Mrs. Georganna Dixon, Mrs. Carrie L. Sanders, group leader; Mrs. Ella Gladden, young adult supervisor; Mrs. Betty C. Potts, youth supervisor; Mrs. Julia Fetherson, Mrs. Willie Dixon, Mrs. Maggie Daniels, Mrs. Cora Wilson, Mrs. LeatheaD. Adams, Mrs. Hattie Ladson, Mrs. Isbella Leak, Mrs. Martha Hammond, Miss Virginia Praileou and Mrs. Doreatha Howard. Music will be furnished by two all ladies choirs, the ushers chorus and the young adult musical choir. Rev. Lee invites the public to attend Mt. Moriah Primitive Freddie Thompson, 29, will preach his trial sermon at Mt. Moriah Primitive Baptist Church, Sunday, February 22, at 6 D.m “I was led by the holy scrip tures to go into the ministry,’-' Thompson said in a recent interview. His trial sermon will be entitled, ’’The Good Shep herd.” His text will be the 23rd Psalm. ....... ___ • j “““ft 11I6 wants people to become more aware of the relationship people should have with God. He said the closer he came towards accepting his call the more he began to understand the scripture. "Everytime I read the word it gets me more excited," said Thompson. He said the advice of his pastor, the Rev. T. W. Samuels encouraged him to understand his feeling and to seek the ministry. Thompson presently works nights with the Overnight Transportation Company. New Emmanuel .. Durwood Hall, a producer at WSOC Television, will speak at New Emmanuel Congrega tional United Church of Christ, 3540 Beatties Ford Road, Sunday, February 22. Hall will speak during the morning worship service at 11 a.m. The Junior Adult Choir of the church will sing during this service, according to church reporter Mrs. Alice Cowan. Before this program, the church will have its regular Sunday School sevice and classes at 9:45 a m. Sunday School Superintendent is Mrs Dora Earl, Assistant Superin tendent is Lenard Cowan. Classes will be conducted by Mrs. Eleana Choate, Miss Inez Brown, Miss Ger Newkirk and Miss Denetta Caldwell. The Rev. N. C. Calhoun is minister of the church. Greater Gethsemane AME Zion Rev. George E. Battle and members of Greater Gethse mane AME Zion Church will observe the annual Steward's Thanksgiving Service Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. Battle also announces that the Willing Workers of Greater Gethsemane will have a George Washington Tea at the church, 531 Campus Street, Sunday morning im - mediately following the morn ing services. SIMPSON-GILLESPIE According to Rev. James E. McCallum at least two lay members and two young peo ple of the church will attehd a wokshop on Crisis Ministry among minorities to be held in Western North Carolina at Hartzell Memorial Church in Hickory Saturday, February 28. Rev. McCallum reports the workshop will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. St. Tryon Presbyterian Mrs. Lena M. Sammons de livered a speech entitled. ‘Black Americans and the Bicenntenial.” Sunday, February 15 at South Tryon Presbyterian Church. The women of the church sponsored the special 4 p m. program. The observance marked a meeting of a women's group named circle number 5. Music for the program was furnished by the Royalities Ensemble of St. Luke’s Bap tist Church and the recently established South Tryon Gospel Choir. Jesse Hawkins, a member of the Charlotte Symphony, made a surprise guest Crosland Breaks Ground For New Subdivision John Crosland Homes broke ground for a new subdivision, known as Chestnut Lake and located on Lawyers Road, just east of Albemarle Road. Involving 118 acres of heav ily wooded terrain, the new project will consist of approx imately 315 total units - 285 two, three and four bedroom single family homes in the $35,000 to $45,000 price range and 30 two and three bedroom duplexes in the $45,000 to $55,000 price range.
