With Special Program Sigma Gamma Rho To Salute The Bicentennial March 14 ine ureenvilie Neighbor hood Center will be the site of the annual Rhomania Salutes The Bicentennial 1776-1976, sponsored by the Beta Omi cron Chapter of Sigma Gam ma Rho Sorority, Inc. on Sun day, March 14. The program, which will begin at 5 o'clock, will consist of dance ancfsongs given by 13 contestants representing the 13 original colonies. The Gam mettes from Johnson C. Smith University will present a fash ion show, "Walking In Style”, with fashions courtesy of Fra nklin Simon, Smart Shop and Vogue of Gastonia. Mrs. Townes’ Dance group will also perform, and there will be many other features on the program, including a mon ey tree which will be given to the person holding the lucky ticket. During the festivities the king or queen of Rhomania is crowned, the recipient of this honor will be a girl or a boy who has raised the largest amount of money. The proceeds from the pro ject is used to aid in commun ity projects, a scholarship for *a deserving girl at Johnson C. Smith or Barber-Scotia Col lege, and making contribu tions to civic and religious organizations. r ost Office Observing Consumer Protection Week This week is Consumer Pro tection Week at Post Offices around the country. Charlotte postal officials are making an effort to alert the public to their activities to protect postal customers. Several postal service de partments have programs to prevent mail fraud, false re presentation in advertise Dance Marathon Coming Back To Charlotte Remember the dance marathon? Its coming back at the University of North Caro lina at Charlotte. The Alpha Sigma Phi Frat ernity is sponsoring a dance marathon for the Epilepsy Foundation of America and its local chapter beginning on Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m. and running until Sunday, March 7 at 8 p.m. The location will be the Lucas Room in the Cone Uni versity Center on campus. Participants will be couples from the campus fraternities, sororities, and other organiza tions as well as area high school students. Elected offi cials and local personalities will be invited to dance as guests of honor. Entry dead line is Feb. 27. Live music will be provided by area bands. Local person alities will emcee the event. . Winners will receive prizes. P All proceeds will go to the Epilepsy Foundation of Amer ica in conjunction with the Epilepsy Association of North Carolina. Don Goforth, student chairman, said the idea is to help the more than 4 million epileptics across the U. Departments assigned such work include the Postal Inspection Service, Consumer Protection Office in the Law Department of the Postal Service, Consumer Ad vocate Office and the Judicial Offices of the Postal System. Many of the programs to protect its customers have long existed in the postal service. But, as a spokesper son pointed out, this week long promotion is designed to in crease general awareness that such programs do exist. Mayor John Belk indicated his support of the week by issuing a proclamation which was read in City Council meet ing Monday night. But, the week is being handled primar ily by postal news releases to local news media. The following information is being distributed by the ser vice. When a complaint is lodged, a decision is made to invest igate for possible commercial deception or to resolve it in formally under the consumer protection program, where poor business practices - not fraud or misrepresentation - have been found to be the culprit. The postal customer is notified of whatever action is taken The Consumer Protection Office protects consumers from commercial deception by-mail by initiating admini strative proceedings to obtain mail-stop orders. Mail-stop orders, authorized by a statute prohibiting use of the'mails to obtain money by misrepresentation, are issued by the Postal Service’s Judi cial Officer, when it is found that the mails are being used contrary to the false repre sentation statute. These orders result in the return of all subsequent mail to the senders unless it is clear that the correspondence has nothing to do with the mail order scheme. The Consumer Advocate provides postal customers with a strong voice by repre senting the consumer to postal management in matters of delayed or lost mail, non-re ceipt of mail-order purchases or refunds, extension of rural routes, delivery schedules, employee conduct, etc. In October 1975, the Postal Service initiated a nationwide Consumer Service Card Pro gram to provide a quick way for postal customers to voice their complaints/he program is directed at improving and broadening the quality of mail service. Cards are available from letter carriers and at local post offices. A “Mail Fraud Laws” bro chure-Publication No. PI-19 - is available to the public at most post offices.
