Dance Marathon
Coming Back
To Charlotte
Remember the dance
marathon? Its coming back at
the University of North Caro
lina at Charlotte.
The Alpha Sigma Phi Frat

Foundation of America and its
local chapter beginning on
Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m. and
running until Sunday, March 7
at 8 p.m.
The location will be the
Lucas Room in the Cone Uni
versity Center on campus.
Participants will be couples
from the campus fraternities,

by area bands. Local person

. Winners will receive prizes.
P All proceeds will go to the
Epilepsy Foundation of Amer

Epilepsy Association of North

chairman, said the idea is to
help the more than 4 million
epileptics across the U. S. and
particularly the 100,000 epilep
tics within North Carolina.
ments and a program that was
recently set-up to process
complaints. Departments
assigned such work include
the Postal Inspection Service,
Consumer Protection Office in
the Law Department of the
Postal Service, Consumer Ad
vocate Office and the Judicial
Offices of the Postal System.
Many of the programs to
protect its customers have
long existed in the postal
service. But, as a spokesper
son pointed out, this week long
promotion is designed to in
crease general awareness that
such programs do exist.
Mayor John Belk indicated
his support of the week by
issuing a proclamation which
was read in City Council meet
ing Monday night. But, the
week is being handled primar
ily by postal news releases to
local news media.
The following information is
being distributed by the ser
vice. Questions on the inform
ation may be asked over these
telephone lines - 375-8479 and
372-0711, Ext. 639.
When a complaint is lodged,
a decision is made to invest
igate for possible commercial
deception or to resolve it in
formally under the consumer
protection program, where
poor business practices - not
fraud or misrepresentation -
have been found to be the
culprit. The postal customer is
notified of whatever action is
taken
The Consumer Protection
Office protects consumers
from commercial deception
by-mail by initiating admini
strative proceedings to obtain
mail-stop orders.
Mail-stop orders, authorized
by a statute prohibiting use of
the'mails to obtain money by
misrepresentation, are issued
by the Postal Service’s Judi
cial Officer, when it is found
that the mails are being used
contrary to the false repre
sentation statute. These
orders result in the return of
all subsequent mail to the
senders unless it is clear that
the correspondence has
nothing to do with the mail
order scheme.
The Consumer Advocate
provides postal customers
with a strong voice by repre
senting the consumer to postal
management in matters of
delayed or lost mail, non-re
ceipt of mail-order purchases
or refunds, extension of rural
routes, delivery schedules,
employee conduct, etc.
In October 1975, the Postal
Service initiated a nationwide
Consumer Service Card Pro
gram to provide a quick way
for postal customers to voice
their complaints/he program
is directed at improving and
broadening the quality of mail
service. Cards are available
from letter carriers and at
local post offices.
A “Mail Fraud Laws” bro
chure-Publication No. PI-19 -
is available to the public at
most post offices. It gives
details on how enforcement of
these laws protects consum
ers, investors, businessmen,
