Kennon, D.D.S., Chairman of the society’s Public Relations Committee, says “Uncontrolled high blood pressure-hypertension- is a major national public health problem. It is the primary cause of 60,000 deaths each year and a contributing fact or in the 1,500,000 heart at tacks and strokes that occur each year in the United States. An estimated 23 million Amer I icans, or about 15 percent of the adult population, have high blood pressure." He continies, "The preval ence rates of high blood pres sure rise steadily with advanc ing age and , in every age group, the prevalence is high er for blacks than for whites. Among American blacks, not only is the prevalence about twice as high -as that among whites; it is also more sever and occurs at an earlier age. High blood pressure afflicts not only the elderly, but also the young and middle-aged adults in their most produc tive years." Dr. kennon concluded. "Al though detection is simple and painless, and drug therapy is practical and effective, the great majority of hyperten sives are not receiving satis factory treatment. Half of the estimated 23 million Ameri cans with high blood pressure don’t even know they have it; ot those who know, only half are being treated; and of those being treated, only half again have their blood pressure con trolled within normal limits."
