Church News Briefs Dr. Joseph Joy Johnson Is Mount Carmel Baptist Church Sneaker ur. Joseph Joy Johnson, President of the General Bap tist State Convention of North Carolina, State Representa tive in the North Carolina General Assembly from the 21st District, including Robert son, Hoke and Scotland Coun ties, will preach at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Sun day, March 21st at 11 a m. Music will be furnished by the combined choirs of the church. Dr. Johnson also serves as Moderator of the Lumber Ri ver Baptist Association, Cha irman of the Southern Region of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and Vice Chairman of the Robeson County Democratic Executive Committee. Mr. Johnson has received many awards: 1971 Shaw Uni versity Theological Distin guished Alumnus Award, 1971 General Baptist State Conven tion Distinguished Citizen Award, 1971 Baptist Women Merit Award, 1971 State NA ACP Political Leadership YOUTH GOSPEL CHOIR ...Of Woodland United presbyterian Church Awara, 1971 southern Region National Association of Coll ege Women Award, 1971 Robe son County Ambassador of Good Will Award and State Masonic 1971 Leadership Cita tion for Outstanding Accomp lishments as State Legislator. He also received the 1971 Fair mont Man of the Year Award, and is listed in Who's Who in Politics and Religion, in Who's Who in Politics and Religion. Mayiield Memorial Church To Celebrate 7th Anniversary me iviayiieia Memorial Baptist Church, organized in March, 1969, will celebrate their 7th anniversary on Sun day, March 21, at 6 p.m. Rev. Leon C. Riddick and the choir and congregation from Mt. Carmel Baptist Church will be special guests with Reb. Rid dick delivering the Anniver sary Sermon. The Mayfield Memorial Church extended the call to Rev. H.S. Diggs to become pastor in June, 1969. The chu rch at that time boasted of a membership of 425 persons, and assets totaling $135,000. The church has not affiliated with any county, district, state, or national bodies. Ser vices were held in the Oak lawn Elementary school for 5 years until the energy crisis caused the church to worship on Sundays with litte or no heat. A relocation committee was appointed from the Dea con and Trustee Boards, and fortunately facilities were found at 70Q Sugar Creek Road West, where the former Sugar Creek Baptist Church was housed. Thus, on the second Sunday evening in January, 1974 the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church held its first service of worship at 700 Su gar Creek Road West. As fate would have it, the summer of 1974 found the ow 5th, bth Graders To Compete For UJS. Bonds Fifth and 6th graders in the Charlotte area are being given an opportunity to earn $100. $50 and $25 U.S. Savings bonds by the Charlotte Board of Realtors and the Charlotte Board of Education. The children will compete for these prizes by writing an essay or making a poster. Topics for the projects are ™ncle Sam the Man and the Legend" and "Happy Birth day Uncle Sam." The contest started in Feb ruary and will run until April 23. Entry blanks are available at participating schools, and the Board of Realtors Office. I- 1 Rev. H.S. Diggs ...Mayfield Memorial pastor ners of the Sugar Creek Road property interested in selling the building and Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church was faced with the problem of finding another place in which to hold corporate worship ser vices. With recommendations to the church body to purchase the property coming from the Deacons and Trustees, the church, in August, 1974, by a 3 to 1 margin voted to purchase the property. Finding it neces sary to vote again on the purchse of the property, the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church, on April 20, 1975, by secret ballot overwhelmingly voted 315 to 4 to purchase the •property. Hence, the perma nent home for the Mayfield Memorial Baptist church be came the facilities formerly used by the Sugar Creek Bap tist Church. The facilities in clude 12 rooms on the ground floor now being used as Ad ministrative Suites, Lounges. Ushers and First Aid Room, S.S. & B.T.U. Directors off ices, Senior and Junior Mis sionary's Room, Media Cen ter, 15 rooms and 2 assembly rooms on the basement floor now are being remodled for I Child Care, Kitchen and Fel lowship Hall facilities, 27 rooms and 2 assembly rooms on the upper level housing, the Educational, Nursery, Audio Visual, and Finance rooms. There are to be found located in strategic places throughout the main building 13 rest rooms, 9 water fountains, and a Chapel that seats approxi mately 500 persons. Also loca ted on the more than 3'-j acre tract of land is a 7 room house being used as Young Adult Headquarters, a Hut housing the Boy and Girl Scout Tro ops, and a parking lot whereon approximately 100 cars can park. After 7 years of existence as a church organization, the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Family is proud of its accom plishments and affiliations. More than 600 persons have united with the Mayfield Chu rch since its inception and its membership rolls now total more than 1,000 persons. The church now is affiliated with the Mt. Peace Association and all its auxiliaries, Mecklen burg Association,.Mecklen burg County Missionary Uni on, General Baptist State Con vention of North Carolina and its auxiliaries, Lott Carey, Foreign Missionary Conven tion, Progressive National Baptist Convention of Amer ica, Inc., National Council of Churches of Christ in U.S.A., and the Baptist World Alli ance. The assets of the church now total $1,445,000. Drummond who is pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, will lead the 10:45 a m. morn ing worship service. There will also be a special discussion period at 5:30 p.m. lead by Mrs. Agnes McFad den. The theme of the discus sion will be “Woman’s Role in the Church.” These programs were plan ned by Mrs. Mary Wall and Mrs. Mary Phifer. Youth Concert ..The Youth Gospel Choir of the Woodland United Presby terian Church will be pre sented in concert Sunday, March 21, at 6 p.m. After a year of reorganizing, the group has participated in many programs at various churches in the Charlotte ar ea. They also participated in the Lunch Hour Christmas Caroling on Independence Square in downtown Char lotte. Co-director and pianist Bo mer Sadler Jr. and guest pia nist and organist John Nicho las will be responsible for the music. Rev. J.C. Robinson Mt. Moriah pastor ' The group has 24 members ranging in ages eight to 18. They will sing 23 songs, all gospel The group is under the direction of Mrs Charles H Reid, who invites the public with the "promise of an after noon of complete joy.'’ The church is located on Rhyne Road off Moore’s Cha pel Road in the Paw Creek area.
