Page 6-THE CHARLOTTE POST-Thursrlav. March 25, 1976 Church News Briefs Sister Mary Loretta Francis Honored For 50 Years Of Service by Hoyle H Martin. Sr Post Staff Writer “I had an unselfish spirit to give to others and that's a vocation that doesn't come from man but from God." These are the humble and yet characteristic words of Sister Francis, a 71 year old Cuban native and third grade teacher at Our Lady of Consolation School. t Sister Francis says that teaching the "little ones" these 47 past years as a mem ber of Oblate Sisters of Provi dence, a teaching order, has been the joy of her life. She has taught at Our Lady for the past 5 years These comments came in the wake of a special jubilee mass and reception attended by over 350 parishioners, par ents, students, friends and sis ters in honor of Sister Francis' 50 years of Chiristian service which, in her own words, has broueht her “ DrPAt inv anH satisfaction." One of 12 children born to urban architect Jose and Del ores Carenesoltas Sosa, Sister Francis, then known as Plac ida, Sosa, was born in the city 01 Camaguey, 350 miles east of Havana. Placida Sosa attended a school in Camaguey operated by the Oblate Sisters of Provi dence of Baltimore, Mary land. Impressed by the spirit of dedication of the Nuns at the school encouraged Placida to later jouney to Baltimre to receive a Christian education. On March 9, 1929, Sister Mary Francis Sosa was “professed” a sister at St. Francis Convent Baltimore, Md. Subscribing to the view that “I always believed God Meant for me to have many children without being married,” in fluenced Sister Francis to re turn home to teach in the Oblate schools in Cuba where she shared her spirited smile and affectionate manner with thousands of youths between 1933 and 1961, the year Fidel Castro closed all six Oblate schools in Cuba. Rev. Morgan Tann Typifies The Liberated Minister by Abigail L. Flanders Post Staff Writer Inciting... Inspirational... Augmenting his congregation to new and greater spiritual heights as he delivers Ms mes sages to Clinton Chapel, AME Zion Church is Rev. Morgan Tann. Born in Omaha, Nebra ska and raised in both St. Louis, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois, Rev. Tann has been a part of the Charlotte ministry for only eight of his twenty five years in the ministery, but they have been eight very productive years for both min ister and congregation. Unlike many of his collea gues, Rev. Tann does not feel infringed or inhibited by the old taboos and myths concern ing black ministers... Instead, he uses his position and. his church as a catalyst toward the growth of religion for all oppressed people. __i_ _i__i_ _ uiuvn vuui VII to WIIV Ul the freest pulpits in America because the origins of the black ministry gives reason to speak out forthirightly on the issues,' the articulate Rev. Tann explained. ‘We are bet ter able to identify with the oppressed because of our con cern with the human libera tion of all kinds of bondage not just spiritual bondage,"’ he said. The black church is streng thened by ministers like Rev. Tann who is in this, our bicen tennial year, attempting to show the pride in the tradition of the black church. ‘Last Sunday, my whole congrega tion dressed in their early American bicentennial attire, similar to the old slavery out _14s .. And I was dressed in my fanfcv early American minis terialMtire,’ Rev. Tann prou dly statetK|You see, Clinton Chapel, A.RLfc^ion Church is Rev. Morgan Tann ...Much deserved salute the oldest black church in Charlotte. As far back as 1864, slaves worshipped together at Clinton Chapel, sometines in conjunction with their white slave owners,’ he said. This idea to dress up in bicenten nial garb was stimulated by this bit of American History. Rev. Morgan Tann has lived in many diffemt parts of the country and met a variety of people from all walks of life. After his graduation from the University of Washington in Seattle, Morgan Tann decided that the ministery was his calling. He then attended the Pacific School of Religion in Berkley, California. He also studied at the Hood Theologi cal Seminary in Salisbury, North Carolina. Since then, Morgan Tann has pastored four churches. He was trans ferred in 1968 from Logan Temple, A.M.E. Zion Church in Sen Diego, California to Clinton Chapel, A.M.E. Zion Church, located on Rozzells Ferry Road, here in Charlotte. His ambitious effort to mo re totally involve his congre gation in the church and its messages has served as a great reward for the marriage between Rev. Morgan Tann ~ and his congregation, and now for the new home he has found in Charlotte. Mayor John Belk, paying tribute to both Rev. Tann and his church has proclaimed Sunday, March 28th as Clinton Chapel Day for all Charlotte ans . a much deserved salute to the liberated minister.
