178 Complete Red Cross Training In response to the first or ganised volunteer recruitment campaign ever conducted by the Red Cross in Charlotte, 178 new volunteers have comple ted their basic orientation training and are ready to be come volunteers in the com munity. The campaign, which is co sponsored by WSOC Radio and Television, began March 1 and | will continue through April 9.. ' The Red Cross needs a total of • 400 additional volunteers to continue progt-ams offered to the community. These pro grams include classes in home nursing and for expectant Parents, classes in first aid, first aid coverage for specta tors at major events, the blood program, services to military personnel and their families, transportation for the handi capped and hospital volunteer Aide The new volunteer receives a personal interview, com pletes basic orientation and then receives specialized trai ning for the particular job they choose. Volunteer oppor tunities during the day include typists, registrars, donor rooms and canteen aides for the blood program. Others may choose to drive the handi capped, work in hospitals or nursing homes, teach classes or serve on emergency aid teams. Evening and weekend hours are available for hospi-' tal and first aid volunteers. Weekend hours are available for work at the Blood Center, fifth largest in the nation. Anyone interested in becom ing a volunteer should call Red Cross 376-1661 Young Hearts To Sponsor Recital In May Plans for a dramatic recital and the acceptance of a new member were the two impor tant features of the Young at Heart Club meeting Thursday, March 25, according to Mrs. T.M. Nash of 1933 Russell Avenue. The recital will be presented in May. Further details as to the date, place and time are expected to be announced later. Mrs. Sally P. Kelly, presi dent of the club, received Mrs. Bessie W. Mulliens as a new member of the club. The club was' treated to a lunch by hostesses Mrs. Estel la Stowe and Mrs. Luticia Martin. Members were also shown a slide show by Mrs. Bishop Dale, president of the Fleur Jolie Flower Club. As a guest, Mrs. Dale “thrilled us with slides of the most beautiful flower gardens and scenes of Charlotte and other parts of the United States," said Mrs. Nash. Zion Church’s 20th Annual Calendar Tea. The annual entertainment and feating program, billed as ‘‘A Bicentennial Salute To Black Americans,” featured a long list of talented perform ers who recalled in song, verse and dramatizations to contri butions of blacks to Ameri can culture. The two-hour-long program was followed with dining from 14 beautifully decorated food-ladened, tables contain ing some of almost every kind of food imaginable. Twelve of the tables represented a month of the year; one table contained food for guests which included Mayor John Belk, and Councilman Harvey Gantt; and one of the tables, - the Winning Table - was pre pared and decorated by the Young People of the Church. The theme of the winning tab le was "A Salute To Duke Ellington.” Mrs. Marjorie Holman and Rev. Robert Mea chem were among the judges deciding the winner. Mrs. Hattie W. Clark was Chairman of this year’s effort and the Captains of the var Mecklenburg Republicans Set Meetings ine Mecklenburg Countv Republican Party will hold its Presidential Election Year precinct meetings at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 5, Zach Smith, Party Chairman, announced today. The meeting for each of the 107 precincts in the City and County will be held at one of six designated locations throughout the County. Smith said that six senior high scho ols had been selected so that registered Republicans would have to travel only a short distance to attend their pre cinct meeting. The precinct meeting_will be held at the following high schools: Myers Park, Garinger, North Meck lenburg, East Mecklenburg, West Mecklenburg, South Mecklenburg. Precinct meetings will be held to elect the delegates and alternated to the Mecklenburg county Republican Presiden tial election Year Convention to be held on April 26.
