East Stonewall Holds Mortgage Burning Bv .lamps Pppler By James Peeler Post Feature-Writer Bishop William Milton Smith, Presiding Bishop of the Second Episcopal District, Mobile, Alabama, Rev, James E. McCoy, pastor of East Stonewall A.M E. Zion Church, and church officers held a MORTGAGE BURN ING CEREMONY last Sunday following the regular morning worship service at the church at 1729 Griers Grove Road in northwest Charlotte. The ceremony symbolized the retiring of 20->^’i, $35,000 loan acquired 6yearsigo when the church, then pastored by Rev. C. E. Quick, was forced to move in 1969 from its previ ous location on East Indepen dence Blvd because of redeve lopment. When forced to move the congregation of East Stone wall A.M.E. Zion Church num bered 192 persons, according to church Secretary Mary Wil ^nore, and now has 594 mem ^>ers who worship in a struc ture valued at $150,000 at the time of its construction 6 years ago Rev. James E. McCoy will have been pastor of East Stonewall Church for 5 years in July. The Mortgage Burning Ce remony was followed by Din ner in the church's Fellowship Hall Beginners; Orientation Activities Scheduled Beginner’s orientation for all children who will enter a Charlotte-Mecklenburg School for the first time next fall, either as a kindergarten stu dent or first grader, will be May 3-14 Parents should register their children at the shcool to which they will be assigned. Parents who do not know the school to which their children will be assigned should call either the Pupil Assignment Office <372 8620, Ext. 234) or the Informa tion Center (332-5114). Assign ment is based on street ad dress. Annual Arts Festival Being Held At JCSU The annual Black Arts Fes tival at Johnson C. Smith Uni versity is being held this week. Festival activities so far this week have included an appea rence of the Male Chorus of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Ceorgia State Senator Julian Bond, a dance recital by area dance groups and a fashion show by Allen Bailey Produc tions, Inc. of New York City. In addition to these activi ties, three other events were scheduled for the week. Tommy Scott Young, poet and jazz musician was slated to make an appearence Thurs day, April 29 in the University Union Lounge at 8 p.m. Young is a native of South Carolina. He performed in a number of schools in the state under a grant from the S. C. Arts Commission. A Make-Up Clinic was sche dule for Friday, April 30, in the University Union Lounge from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. It features Mrs. Jean Holland. A dance will be held Satur day, May 1, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in Hartley Woods Gym nasium. Music will be per r.z formed by the Solar Ray's v ; Band. Admission is $1. Mudents living in areas where there are paired schools will attend orientation at the school which has kinder garten or first grade. For ex ample, children living in the Druid Hills area should attend beginner’s orientation at Al bermarle Road Elementary. A child must be six years old on or before Oct. 16, 1976, to enter the first grade in the fall or five years old by the same date to enter kindergarten. North Carolina law requires the following immunizations for every child entering school! -one red measles < many chil dren receive this in combina tion with German measles vaccine); —three DPT (diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus); and, -three polio. No child will be admitted to any Charlotte-Mecklenburg school this fall unless proper evidence of immunizations is presented by the day the child enters. Before entering school, a child should have a complete physical examination by his private physician or the Heal th Department. The beginners’ day program is designed for those children who will enter school for the first time. Some schools will have only kindergarten chil ren reporting; other will have only first graders. A few schools will have both kinder garten and first grade stu dents reporting. New Saint John The New Saint John Baptist Church, Newell, N.C., pastor - ed by Rev. Robert H. Leak, will hold its Annual Woman's Day Program Sunday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. According to Program Chairman Margie Elmore, the speaker for the Morning Wor ship Service will be Mrs. Rosa Lee Moore, President of the Senior Missionary Society of St. John Baptist Church. The guest speaker for the afternoon service will be Mr. Leroy McFreely of Mount Zion Baptist Church and the public is cordially invited to attend. Mt. Moriah Primitive Youth Movement and the Rev. Thomas W. Samuels of Greater Mounth Moriah Pri mitive Baptist Church will perform in concert Sunday, May 2, at 6 p.m. The concert will feature va rious arrangements of gospel favorites such as “What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and a special Bicentennial sa lute. For the salute, the choir will sing its version of "Lift Every Voice And Sing." Pleasant Hill The Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 517 Baldwin Avenue, will journey to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Lancaster, S. C. on Sunday, May 2. Rev. J. A. Cuthbertson, pas tor will render the sermon and r— music will be furnished by the Young Adult Choir and the Spirtual Choir. Alt. Aloriah Baptist The junior church of Alt. Aloriah Baptist Church in Mat thews, N.C. will celebrate its 12th annual day Sunday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m. Guest speaker for the obser vance will be the Rev. Welch Caldwell, pastor of Faith Aie morial Baptist Church Following the Sunday pro gram, the youth will begin their annual revival Alonday, Alay 3-7, at 7:30 p.m. each evening.-The Rev. L. D. Par ker, pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church will deliver a message each evening. Junior church advisors are Mrs. Millie King, Mrs. Sonny Cureton, Mrs. Blache Harris and Jan Robinson, secretary. Anthony Clyburn is treasurer. The Rev. J. C. Robinson is pastor of the church. Faith Memorial Pastor Welch H. Caldwell of Faith Memorial Baptist Church will lead services at Mount Aloriah Baptist Church of Matthews at 3 p.ni., Sun day, May 2.
