Published Volume To List Black Achievers Who s Who Among Black Americans,” a recently pub lished volume of comprehen sive listings of prominent black achievers from all walks of life, was edited by ABC News Correspondent Wil liam Matney. The volume, the most detail ed documentation of achieve ments by blacks ever assem bled, is the result of three years of research and includ es 10,000 entries. “Who’s Who Among Black Americans” contains biogra phical information on living blacks who have attained high levels of achievement in go vernment, business, educa tion, religion, journalism, ci vic affairs, arts, law, medi cine, civil rights, sports and science. Commenting on the publica tion, William Sheehan, Presi dent of ABC News, said, “We at ABC are very impressed with th thoroughness of Bill Matney’s effort, and pleased that one of our correspondents has made such an outstanding contribution to the recognition of black achievement.” According to Matney, a wide variety of organizations and individuals were contacted during the volume's prepara tion in order to make it as cumprenensive as possible. Some of these include the N.A. A.C.P., the National Urban League, the National Council of Negro Women, the “For tune 500" corporations, the Governors of the 50 states, the Mayors of 350 cities, the De mocratic and Republican par ties and the White House. Mat ney adds that the response from those contacted was ex cellent. To increase the volume’s reference value, two indexes list biographies by occupation and by state and city. Matney has been a televi sion and radio correspondent for ABC News since 1972. From 1970-1972, he served NBC as the first black corres pondent permanently assign ed to the White House. His long career in journalism be gan in 1964 after his gradua tion from the University of Michigan, when he joined the Michigan Chronicle in Detroit. Miss Della Scales, last year's winner, placed second in this year's contest and Miss Toby Perry, a member of Salem Baptist Church, placed Third". Miss Sandra Hayes, representing Mt Zion Baptist Church, pastored by Rev. E C. Elder, placed Fourth and last. This year's financial effort by the Youth Department for the Mt. Peace Auxiliary rais ed over $600 and “the money will be used for foreign, state, and local missionary work", according to Mrs. Mary L. Robertson. Youth Program Chairman.
