Battle Of Charlotte
Scheduled For May 22
The “Battle of Charlotte,"
the largest Revolutionary War
Battle reenactment in the Uni
ted States, is scheduled for
May 22-23 at the Charlotte
Motor Speedway.
Approximately 1,000 troops
are expected during the three
day weekend to recreate the
actions of 1781, according to A.
Grant Whitney, Chairman of
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Bi
centennial Committee.
Beginning Friday, May 21,
authentic camp areas will be
constructed by arriving forces
depicting the actual life styles
of the period. Families and
soldiers will relive daily rou
tines of over 200 years ago.

period have been carefully
perpared by the participants.
There will be two battle
reenactments: The Battle of
Charlotte from 4:30 p.m. to S
p.m. on Saturday, May 22, and
the Battle of Guilford Court
house from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30
p.m. on Sunday, May 23.
Each participant will re
ceive a bronze medal, a bicen

tennial certificate and a copy
of the Mecklenburg Declara
tion of Independence.
There will be no admission
charge for the three-day e
vant.
The battles will be reenact
ed in the speedway’s road
course area, giving spectators
a very good view of the activi
ties. Arrangements are being
made by jCharlotte Motor
Speedway officials and archi
tects to design a natural set
ting for the action. With the
use of hay. nets and shrubbery
all modern facilities such as
the asphalt road course will be
disguised.
