tor Acadenuc Excellence Ai West Charlotte High School’s Annual Honors and Awards Investiture held Sun day, May 2, in the school auditorium, announcements were made of four full four year scholarships, 25 other awards by colleges and organ izations and over 140 medals and certificates for academic excellence and good citizen ship. At the event, during which 589 seniors first put on their academic attire, awards were giyen to three students out standing in their grade levels and to 4d student bus drivers for outstanding service. Music for the event was provided by the Salt and Pepper Singers, directed by Susan Matthews. A prelude, processional and - recessional was played by stu dent William McConnell. Full foul'-year scholarships were won by five outstanding West Charlotte students. Ted dy Reid Hartis received the Johnston Award to UNC-Cha pel Hill, Janet Moss received the Morehead Scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill. David Way mer was awarded a scholar shin to Notre Dame. Departmental awards in mathematics were a medal to Gerald Burnette and certifi cates to Ginger Walsh, Eliza beth Alexander, Robert Bass, and David Stephenson. Con testants for national awards in mathematics were Matt Len non and Grace Ayscue. Science certificate recipi ents were Julie Halas, Mary Jean Webster, Beverly Austin, Gary Dorton and Signa Bum gardner. Social Studies Awards were a medal to Margaret Cale and certificates to Mike Riley, Ro bert Hampton, Susan Peter son, Leisa Marley and Lance Indgeman In the Open school, social studies awards *ere a medal to Jeff Moore and certificates to Mike Riley, Mike Osborne, Bill McCoy and Dawn Sturdivant. English awards were a me dal to Lenora Sanders and certificates to Grace Ayscue, Susan Peterson, Susan Cal kins, Lance Bridgeman and Terry Jordan. In the Open School, certificates went'to Ann Holder and Ginger Walsh. In foreign languages Kathy Nunnally received a medal for Spanish and Anna Rosser for Russian. Certificates were presented to Jeanne Heuer man and Gerald Burnette in German; David Stephenson and Neil Pylant in French; Beverly Austin and Myra Aus tin in Spanish. Contestants for national a wards in French were Susan Peterson, Maria Howe, Came ron Hamrick and David Ste phenson. In art, Margaret Couch and Tedd Duncan won national achievement awards. In electronics, Nick Depie tro won a medal. In distributive education, Lewis Jordan and James Grier won Charlotte Mer chants Association Bond A wards; proficiency awards were won by Lewis Jordan, Tami Owens and Tina Bracey. State Leadership Conference trophies were won by Sheri Smith, Lewis Jordan, Kevin Love and Tami Owens. DECA Leadership Conferenc troph ies were won by Robin McKei than and Lewis Jordan. Lewis Jordan also won a school me dal, and Sharon Hayes, Elaine Estep and Betsy Hodge won certificates. In choral music, certificates were won by Gloria Bentley, Joel Gilland, Angela Plummer and Marsha Ring. In the "Hang-On” program Cheryl Richardson won a me dal and certificates were a warded to Karrin Sharpe, Princess Cornwall, Mike Max well, Tina Wolfe and Cindy Brafford. In the ROTC program the Reserve Officers Association Patrpit Award was presented to Cadet Captain Terry Jor dan; medals were given to Gerald Burnette and John La tour and certificates to Cadet Major Elizabeth McKee, 1st Lt. Rhonda Walker, Cadet Capt. Curtis Sutton; Cadet MSG. Diane Ettman and Ca det Major Herbert Watson. Graphics and Photography awards were medals to Gloria Bentley in graphics and Betsy Bryan in photography and cer tificates to Terry Jordan in graphics and Nick Dipietro in photography. In Tailoring Michael Cole man received a medal and Doris Thompson, Patricia Yancey, Pamela Johnson and Geneva Farrer certificates. In Cosmetology a medal went to Janet Susan Webb and certificates to Cassandra Fun derburke, Sherry Ann Mc Moore, Sallie Young and Do renthia Simpson. Cabinetmaking awards were a medal to James Stroup and certificates to Ricky Cline, Ernest Hampton and Timothy Stewart. Drafting awards were a me dal to Charlie Smith and certi ficates to Walter Hood and Barbara Lane. Gladys Anderson in food Services, trophies were awarded to Kevin Love (first place) and Sheri Smith (second place). Tina Bracey won a proficiency award. In Business Education a wards were presented to Aa ron Griffiths, L’Tanya Adams, Darrell Garner, Robin Sum mey and Edward Thomas.
