Gets Federal
Appointment

A former assistant minister
at Greenville AME Zion
Church here in Charlotte has
recently been granted a Fede
ral Civil Service appointment
in the U S. Department of
Health, Education and Wel
fare (HEW).
The Rev Vergel L. Latti
more III, a graduate of North
Mecklenburg High School and
a 1975 honor graduate of Liv
ingstone College, will serve as
a Chaplain Student Intern for
10 weeks in Washington.
During this period, he will
receive mental health training
with special emphasis on un
derstanding the nature of in
terpersonal relations. This
training is intended to help
prepare the pastor for maxi
mum usefulness in the mental
and emotional health aspects
of pastoral care, counseling
and the relation of these heal
th aspects to spiritual health.
Lattimore has a number of
other experiences to his cre
dit. He served as intern minis
ter to Trinity AME Zion
Church in Gastonia. As a stu
dent, he was president of the
Livingstone College Student
Government Association, the
Pre-Theological Union, his
fraternity and his class.
He held membership in Al
pha Ka Mu National Honor
Society and was named to
Who’s Who Among Students in
American Universities and
Colleges. Lattimore is pre
sently a student at Duke Uni
versity Divinity School, where
■ he is treasurer of the Black
Seminarians Union. Other ac
tivities include membership
on the Social Concerns Com
mittee, Community Life Com
mittee and he serves as secre
tary-treasurer of the Gradu
ate Center Council.

-ter of St. Marks AME Zion
Church in Durham, he concen
trates his efforts in the Chris
tian Education Department
working in Sunday School in
struction and co-advising the
Carick Christiah Endeavor,

NINTH ANNIVERSARY last
Sunday beginning at 4 p m.
More than 200 gospel music
enthusiast attended the two
and one-half hour long pro
gram which featured guest
appearances from Bellefonte
Presbyterian Church Choir,
Huntersville Baptist Church
Gospel Choir, The Holy Inspi
ration Choir of St. Luke Bap
tist Church, The Gospel Di
mensions, and a solo perfor
mance by Rev. R. H. Leak of
New St. John Baptist Church,
accompanied at the piano by
Mike Allen.
Miss Desiree Abraham was
Mistress of Ceremony for the
program which included parti
cipants Sharon Bridges, who
read the Scripture; Willis Ro
bijisan.who delivered a pray
ef; Hafold Williams, who ex
tended the Welcome Address;

According to Miss Adams,
The Voices of Nazareth Choir,
formerly The Teenage Choir,
was organized in 1967 when
Nazareth Primitive Baptist
Church was located on Oliver
Street in the Greenville resi
dential section. The choir was
formed from the teenage
members of the church's Sun
day School Class under the
leadership of Miss A. B. Gra
ham. Since its organization,
the Voices of Nazareth Choir
has had three advisors: The
first was Mr. Lewis Gaddy
who was followed in the posi
tion by Miss Annie White. The
choir, whose name was chang
ed in 1975, is presently guided
by advisor Louise Sterling.
Under Mrs. Sterling’s direc
tion, the Voices of Nazareth
Choir has formed a Youth
Prayer Meeting Night with

lotte until graduation.
Raised on East Hill Street in
Brooklyn and Crest Street in
Greenville, she remembers

She attended Johnson C.
Smith University for one year
and got married shortly there
after.
Sargeant Williams lived
four houses from her in Green
ville and from their union in
1951. Denise Maria Williams,
22, a 1975 graduate of the
University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill who works at
Planned Parenthood. Mrs
Gail W. Richard. 21. a rising
senior at UNC-CH; Stanton
Duke Williams, 15. a rising
