Greg Rhett dances through defenders on his way down the field to the goal, and should help the Blue Devils in the ACC. Shy, long-legged high jump ing Howard Staton of North is the county’s best high jumper with a high of 6’5” and was also a good basketall player. He will attend either Mitchell or North Carolina Central Uni versity to pursue a career in computer science or ousiness administration. Versatile, stylistic, spiry, a gile, Vernon McRae of South is also an excellent high jumper at 6'4” and caught many pass es at his split end position in football. Soft-spoken, personable, af fable, lean Ervin McKinley of North has the attitude essen tial for being an excellent athlete. One of the county's better basketball centers, he long jumped, broad jumped, triple jumped and ran the 440 relay in track. Determined Richard Hill of West Charlotte was a terror on the hardwood as a basketball player and set a record this season in the triple jump at 46-2 only to be broken two weeks later by Indepen dence’s Tony Reid. Hill’s schoolmate David Waymer was All-County at halfback on offense and defen sive on defense. He can do it all During the baseball sea son he homered consistently for the Lions. He will attend Notre Dame on a full scholar ship next year. Spinning with the moves of a spider weaving his opponents into a death web, 6’1” Gene Harris of Olympic averaged 26 points per game while leading Gene Harris ..."Cager of Year” his Trojans to the runnerup position in the rugged South western 4-A conference. The Charlotte Post Basketball Player of the Year will attend Winston Salem State. Strong bullish Newton Den nis Leon Williams ran for over 200 yards in one game at fullback last year. All-County as as junior he also played basketball and is one of Che county's better high jumpers at 6’4” and runs the low hur dles, mile relay, long jump, broad jumps and triple jumps. Tall, and intimidating under the backboards and devasting with his county-leading throw of 157-6 in the discus 6’5” Ondra Richardson of Olympic was All-County in Basketball. Running hard for the Pa triots Freddie Mungo also found time to be All-County in wrestling at his position and a good trackman. The Cunningham twins, Stan and Sid started in basket ball, played halfback in foot ball. Stan was a tackle in Richard Hill .. .Triple jump artist football and a guard in basket ball and has the county’s best shotput throw of almost 5f! feet. Both are excellent ath letes. North Mecklenburg’s wrest ling and football teams were among the best in the county and two reasorts were Sher wood Rankin and Lewis Wood ely. Lewis was All-County in football and wrestling, tackl ing and piniug opponents in the 195 division for a confer ence record of 17 and o. • . Rankin was 16 and 0 in wrestling and honorable men tion at noseguard in football. Davidson was 17 and 1 in I ' ■ wrestling and an AH-Countv football player. He starred in track and accepted a scholar ship to Johnson C. Smith Uni versity . Aaron Cunningham was the All-County quarterback fcr South Mecklenburg. Dropping back to set up under immense pressure he led the Sabres to a 6-4 record. In basketball he was a member of the 1976 North Carolina State High School Athletic championship team at the forward position. Versatile in track and bas ketball, Donnie Lanier jumps 6’2’' in the high jump and was a shining star on an Indian basketball team that never go untracked. Melvin Hoover, North’s Mr. Everything Man, versatile at split-end in football, All-Coun ty. and good in basketball and baseball and very good in tennis, a sport he doesn't par ticipate in. Jerome Mobley of South was the biggest reason the Sabers won the State championship. Weaving, spinning, and jump ing he lead a smooth red machine to victory's circle. Roderick Fuller of Harding was one of the county’s best basketball stars leding the Rams to victory from his guard position.
