Quiet Arthur Miller Manages A&P Central Plaza Store By Abigail L. Flanders Post Staff Writer He quietly stalks the aisles of the Central Ave. A&P store, watching, studying and listen ing to the sounds of the an xious buyers as they wander through the store with their buggies...squeezing the pro duce and choosing their gro cery items for the week. As manager of the A&P store, Arthur Miller observes peo ple, not just because it is a part of his job, but because he feels that he possesses the ability to see the personalities of individuals just by studying their facial expressions...whe ther they are shopping in the store, or just walking down the street. "I don't believe a per son has to do a lot of talking in order for your to know his personality. I enjoy observing people and guessing what they ^re really like," Mr. Miller said. Mr. Miller began working at the A&P supermarket about 20 years ago as a bagger-store clerk. After 20 years of hard work and dedication to the store, he was made manager, a position which he has held for nearly four years. He is presently the only black ma nager of the Charlotte A&P store. "I've learned that two of the most important things in earning a position regardless of what the position is, is to work hard and be honest in your work. I believe that too many people waste their time mixing play with work. There is a time and a place for both. When a person is working, he should be serious about what he is doing. That, to me, is one of the most valuable secrets of success at any job." Arthur Miller is. a native Charlottean. and a graduate of Plato Price High School. He is a down-to-earth man whose idea of the good life is living comfortably, simply, and keeping in mind that there is no such thing as a "little man". He seems to believe that "Fate is the hunter" that directs many lives. Therefore, each man has the chance to find his nitche in the world. Although he has had no college training. Mr. Miller's alert mind and sensitivity to wards his fellow man has rewarded him with a comfort able life, and enjoyable occu pation. and an honest outlook of the future. 15 Million Blacks Can Vote ^onunuea trom p.i that Presidential election. That is a whopping 80 percent of all those black registered to vote. This figure startled a lot of people when it was released that year. However, authori ties-tell us that it is not unusu al for registered voters to turn out 70-80 percent in President ial election years. The in-between years, the off-Presidential year elec tions, is when voter interest woefully lags. In the 1974 congressional races for exam ple, blacks eligible to vote numbered 14,174,000. But only 4,786,000 of the registered 7,778,000 actually turned out to vote. This was a miserable 34 percent of the total black eligible vote. I am indebted to John Britton of the Joint Center for Political Stu dies for some of those figures. Some of them were issued by the BLS, which the JCPS also uses. Using the BLS elibible black voter projection, what can we expect the voter turnout to be this year? BLS is forecasting a low 55 percent black voter registration this year. That means only 8.25 million blacks will register to vote. But if BLS Presidential elec tion figures are correct, 80 percent of this voter comple ment, or 6.6 million black will caist their ballots for Presi dent. - History has shown that blacks, as other races and ethnic groups will vote for those politicians we believe will do the most for us - or those, at any rate, who pro mise or in some way signal they will do the most for us. This is acting in what one perceives to be self interest. And no one should fault that. For it will not be a vote against white folks, or any other folks, but a vote for our urgent needs. _ Asl jperb ARTHUR MILLER ...Had humble beginning A SPECIAL INVITA ΉΟΝ FROM Τ EISA 5 HOUSE OF CHARM Tena sends you a special invitation to let Ms. B.
