One such newsmaker, out ■ standing clergyman Rev. I James Arthur White, who ce lebrated his 23rd Anniversary i as pastor of Shiloh Institution al Baptist Church last March, had these things to be thankful for and commented: "Since moving into our new location at 2085 Bruns Ave-, our membership has more than tripled. I came here in 1953 when the membership was 75-we now have over 600 mem bers." "One hundred and fif ty, mostly young people, join ed in the last 2 years." Rev. White added, "We now have a Day Care Center, started in 1967, that can acco mwjate 23 children. We have 23™ ildren enrolled with 25 or 30 on a waiting list, and we plan to expand to accomodate more children." Rev. White and his congre gation which was formerly located at 913 F Hill mill have been in their present building 10 years this October and have "reduced a $45,000 mortgage down to $20,000 while sustaining a Christian Education Organizational Program that meets the spirit ual needs of the church mem bers "from 1 year to 100 years of age", said Rev. White. Rev. White says "Shilohhas come from an annual budget of $3,000 to a budget of $74,000 I in 1974." The Moderator of the Mount Peace Missionary Baptist As sociation added. "We have a Senior Citizen's Club, Nurse ί ι ry. Day Care Center, and weekly meeting with some thing for everybody." Rev. White, who plans to retire in March of 1977 or 1978, left last Monday for San Fran cisco, California where he will attend the National Baptist Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress which ends Saturday and will be attended by approximately 20,000 delegates from through out the United States. Under Dr. White,.. Shiloh I Institutional (lurch. 4 hosted the National Sunday School and BTU Convention in Charlottç in 1966 with approxi mately 15,000 people attend ing. According to Rev. White, it was "the largest convention held in Charlotte up until that time." Rev. White is active in the General Baptist State Conven tion, the National Baptist Con vention, Inc, and the Ameri can Baptist of the South. He has served on the Executive Board of all the Conventions and participated in their lead ι prehir* · ST. MARK ΑΜΕ ZION The Rev. Wiibert Davis 20, a second year seminarian at Hood Theologial Seminary, Salisbury, N.C. has assumed duties as assistant minister for the summer months at St. Mark AME Zion Church West Main Street, Luray, Virginia, in the absence of the church's regular minister, the Rev. J. Dallas Jenkins. Rev. Davis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louie B. Daviç of 1W)8 Providence Road, Mat tffiws, N.C. preached his first sermon on June 13. The 1973 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School worked at Long and Son Mor tuary on Beatties Ford Road for one year while attending Livingstone College. Rev. Davis is a member of Jonesville AME Zion Church, pastored by Rev. Clinton L. Wilcox, where he was Assis tant Superintendent of Sunday Schools for 4 years before enrolling at Livingstone Col lege, The 3 p.m service marking Rev. Davis's first sermon at St. Mark's also featured Rev., r rencn Myers, pastor 01 uaK Grove AME Zion Church, Gai thersburg, Md., whose choir and members of his congrega tion were present for the occasion. NEW HAMPTON "To be a part of the New Hampton United Presbyterian Church has been a challenge as well as a blessing for me", said the Rev. Miles 0. Smith at the dedication of the new church building Sunday, June 20. "The New Hampton United Presbyterian Church must carry on the job that remains for us to do," Smith also said. "We can not stop, we must not stop, the task is too great, the . joy is too wonderful and God's love is lasting. We must now work together in Christian hope and faith." During the service, Westcoe Gillespie, chairman of the building fund committee pre sented the keys of the church to the pastor. Mrs. Jean Wil liams presented the church with a portrait of the late Dr. υ uoncc m. niaiuil, cl lUrmer pastor of the church who served for 38 years. An organ was also presented prior to the laying of a corner stone. The Rev. H.W. Givens, pas tor of Memorial United Pres byterian Church, gave a brief history of New Hampton. A former New Hampton minis ter, the Rev-. Wilburn Sanders of Statesville Avenue Presby terian Church congratulated the congregation on having the faith and courage to re build their sanctuary, which burned down October 29, 1974. C- " Greeting and remarks were given by the Rev. Robert Craighead, moderator of the Frist United Presbyterian Church of Waxhaw. Craighead represented the Catawba Presbytery Unit. He spoke of the challenges of the Christian church in the modern world. Refreshments were served following the service. MOUNT MOR1AH CHURCH Rev. Thomas W. Samuels and members of Mount Mori ah Primitive Baptist Church, 747 W. Trade St., will spend most of Sunday, July 11, cele brating during their annual homecoming observance of homecoming. Beginning with a special Sunday School program at I : σ.ιο a.m., UIC tcicui cllIUIl Will climax at 3 o'clock in the afternoon with the Rev. Paul Drummond. pastor of St. Paul's Baptist Church as the featured speaker. A former pastor of Mount Moriah, the Rev. J.H. Ken· drick, who presently pastors the Zion Hope Primitive Bap tist Church in Pensacola, Fla. will be the special guest spea ker at the morning worship service. The annual home coming fellowship dinner will be held at the J.T. Williams Junior High School immediately fol lowing the 11 a.m. worship service. Rev. Samuels, who invites the public to join this worship services, announces said that • "Commemorating 200 years of religious freedom for Christ and our country" is the theme of the observance. CHINA GROVE A $10,000 goal has been set for the "Parade of States," a Bicentennial program that will be held at China Grove AME Zion Church, 7585 Pine ville Road, Sunday, July 4. at 6 p.m. pants will represent the Go vernor of each state. Each Governor will give a brief history of his State and will make a financial report. This patriotic theme will also be used during the regu lar 11 a.m. worship service and at a special afternoon program. Some members and friends of the church will wear clothes styled according to different eras of the past. The Rev. M.C. Houston will speak at a "Mass Bicentennial Observance" at 2 p.m., Sun day, at Stough Memorial Bap tist Church. Nine churches in the Pineville area will take part in· the observance. A special unit of the Board of Elections will also be on hand to give church goers a chance to register to vote. SOUTH TRYON The Ministers from South Tryon Presbyterian and Ami ty Presbyterian Churches ex changed pulpits on June 20th. The Rev. A. Rudolph Hen dricks preached at Amity in the 10 a.m. service and the Rev. Fred C. Holder preached at South Tryon's 11 a.m. ser vice. The ministers of both chur ches indicated that the ex change was successful and promoted a greater under standing between the two churches. Other cooperative activities may follow as a result of the exchange. The men of South Tryon Presbyterian Church observ ed Men's Day-On Sunday June 20th with a special program at 4 p.m. featuring mini-mes sages by the men of South Tryon. Speakers included Curtis Parker, Jr., John Montgome ry, Tyrone Nimmons and Er nest Gilchrist All messages were timely centered around the Father's Day theme and lasted from three to five minu tes. Geraldo Stroud was organist for the occasion with music iciiuereu uy rtir. BOD Kliey, soloist. Musical selections were rendered by the Young Men of the South Tryon ACT Club and the Gospeleers Trio. Other participants on the program were Claude McClin ton and George Venable. Fol lowing the program, a recep tion was held in the church fellowship hall. PRESBYTERY Mrs Barbara Ρ Hendricks represented the Mecklenburg Presbytery as its ethnic mino rity participant at the 116th meeting of the General As sembly held on the campus of Stillman College in Tuscaloo sa. Alabama. Stillman College is one of the four year Colleges sup ported by the denominations. Several items of importance focusing on women and ethnic minorities were discussed by the assembly. Mrs. Barbara Hendricks is the wife of the minister of South Tryon Presbyterian Church where she was recent^ ly ordained as an elder, a distinction held by only a few. At her church she is active in numerous activities. Profes sionally, she is a media spe cialist at West Charlotte High GREATER MT SINAI In a Bicentennial tribute to three outstanding Blacks, three portraits will be painted on Sunday, July 4 at the Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. The portraits of Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first black 1 United States Senator; Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, a great show business man and Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a great poet will be featured during the morning service.
