CHINA GROVE AME ZION CHURCH —One year old on July 4 China Grove AME Zion Church Celebrates Bicentennial The rain did not dampen the spirits of the pastor and con gregation of China Grove AME Zion Church, 9401 Old Pineville Road, as they cele brated a “Bicentennial” Homecoming Day, Sunday, July 4, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. They were not only observing the 200th Birthday of our great Country, but also the first anniversary of their new edi fice. This rewarding day brought love, honor and pride to the hearts of both the young and the elderly as they were so beautifully dressed in their colonial attire. The choirs added life and vigor to the morning service with hymns and songs of independence and unification, and through his message the Rev. Maxie L. Houston, Sr. instilled within the congrega tion, truth and purpose of this great and honored day. At 2 p.m., the pastor, choir and congregation were invited to Stough Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville, N.C., to join in a mass Bicentennial Cele bration with eight other chur ches. This too, was a memo rable occasion. The Rev. Hou ston delivered the afternoon message for this celebration. As the pastor and congrega tion returned to China Grove for the evening service, spirits were still high. An annual “States” drive was held that evening. Each governor not only submitted a financial report, but he or she also gave a brief history of the state as represented. The highlight of the evening were the “Entertainers," a group of five (including the pastor), which was formed especially for this occasion. This group, directed by Mr. James A. Wilson, sang Negro Spirituals, which brought back memories and mellowed the hearts and souls of many. The Young Adult Choir of the Church also rendered two beautiful selections.
