Barber-Scotia Receives Tide ID Grant Barber-Scotia College has received a $575,000 Title III Grant for the 1976-77 school year. The grant award includ ed program support for nine programs on the campus, five of which are being continued from the previous year and four new programs. The Programs to be continu ed are the Consortium on Research Training which is funded at the level of 200,000 and located in the southeast ern part of the United States including the Virgin Islands. The College directly benefits from the remainder of the grant award through the con tinuation of its Entry Level Program (freshman studies), the Institutional Research Program, the International Curriculum Program, and the Long-Range Planning Pro gram. The new program for the 1976-77 school year will in clude support for Administra tive Improvement with David son College serving as the assisting institution; support for a Learning Resources Cen ter and for the development of a Test Taking and Learning Skill Program. The Cultural Enrichment Program which is also a part of the Grant should be of particular interest to the Concord community since this program allows the College to bring in nationally know art ists for perfromances that are to be open to the student body and the entire Concord com munity. There was no formal pro gram for Saturday’s 4 until 8 affair and this year’s reunion activities were concluded with a gathering in the backyard of clan member Nola Freeman at 2601 Roslyn Ave. on Sunday. Family members present for this year’s reunion were: Ed H Brown, of Camden, New Jersey; Ethel Brown Patter son, of McCormick, S.C.; Hol sey Brown, of Charlotte; Nola Brown Freeman, Charlotte; Margaret Brown Harris, Charlotte; William H. Brown, Charlotte; Wynona Brown Walker, Atlanta.-Ga.; Marion Brown Connor, Detroit Mich.; and Lucille Brown Alexander, New York City, N.Y.; and a host of nephews, neices, and cousins. Mrs. Lucille Alexander said the family will reunite next year in Charlotte and “every year as long as mother is alive.” io,UUU -fcJderly Poor Provided Jobs ” njuii^u i wi\--iviore than 18.000 workers, 55 and over, were provided federally subsidized, part-time commu nity service jobs in the nine months ending March 31, Se cretary of Labor W.J. Usery Jr.has announced. Black workers accounted for 20 percent of the 13,210 participants who were in the program as of March 31. The older workers, all eco nomically disadvantaged were participants in the Se mor Community Service Em ployment Program (SCSEP). Wages are subsidized by the U.S. Labor Department. The Labor Department spent $24,140,000 for the pro gram from July 1, 1975 through March 31, 1976. SCSEP participants work in a wide variety of activities in such places as day care cen ters, schools, hospitals, senior citizen centers, and on beauti fication, conservation, and re storation projects. The program also provides participants with annual phy sical examinations, personal and job-related counseling.job training and, in some cases, placement into regular unsub sidized jobs. Participants' wages average about $2.40 an hour. SCSEP is an alternative to welfare. It offers the commu nities a federally evenly divi ded, 72 percent were between the ages of 55 and 69.
