Obit liar Final Rites For Mr. Taylor Joseph L. Taylor, 79-year- ι old longtime Boy Scout leader and owner of Taylor and Hay es Recapping Co., died Thurs day at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. He lived at 912 Cam pus St. A native Charlottean, Mr. Taylor worked in the tire business 47 years and was a former scout master and a scout supporter for nearly three decades. He began his career as a shipping clerk and went on to work for what later became the Dayton Tire Co., for more than 45 years. In the late 19S0's he devised a new procedure that enabled his company to more than double its produc tion for passenger-car tire recapping. He retired from Dayton in 1962 and became an owner of Taylor and Hayes Recapping Co. Active in scouting since 1947. he was the scoutmaster of Troop 67 sponsored by Ebenezer Baptist Church where his scouts were usually aggressive young men who conducted fund raisings to pay for field trips and other scout ing activities. Many of them were underprivileged and Mr. Taylor quickly would lend guidance, counseling and fi nancial support to "his boys". He also worked with the McCrorey YMCA for more than 20 years, serving as a member of the board of direc tors for 18 years. In addition to being one of the McCrorey YMCA's steadiest money rais ers, he also got contributions to pay for membership for youngsters who could not af ford the fees. J. Robert Raye, member of the board of directors and president of the Progressive Family Club at the Y said that he found within the northwest Charlotte area several young men were helped by Taylor in some way. "All boys benefited by knowing him; there was no such thing as an underprivi ledged boy when they met Joe Taylor." Mr. Taylor, whom is best remembered as helping some youngsters through college, also was instrumental in building the old Camp Oaks for scouts in the late 1940 s and served on the staff there. He was given the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award in scouting for his contributions. He was a member of Ebene zer Baptist Church where he was a deacon, member of the trustee board and president of the finance committee. He is survived by his wife, Canary, and sons, Elmer D.
