In keeping with the bicen
tennial year, the Washington
Heights Flower and Garden
Club has presented two beauti
ful flower beds to Oaklawn
Elementary School.
Mrs. Maude Small, the foun
der and organizer of the club,
which was established in 1941,
says that the purpose for
putting these flowers near
Oaklawn Elementary School
is to give the children ideas of
how to keep in touch with
beauty as well as how to
appreciate it. "The children
have been just marvelous a
bout taking care of the flo

wers. since we started the
project, there have not been
any instances of damage to
the shrubberies or flowers."
Mrs. Small said.
The Washington Heights
Flower and Garden Club is the
first black club of its kind in
the Charlotte area. They be
gan their beautification pro
ject by planting shrubbery
and roses at Oaklawn Elemen
tary school in 1956. This year,
their Civic Committee, headed
by Mrs. Small, decided to
raise the money to add a
bicentennial flavor to the
school by planting dwarf
plants, consisting of snap dra
gons, marigolds, scarlet sage

president of the club, Mrs.
Scott, secretary of the com
mittee, Mrs. Cochrane also
worked on the committee and
sold chitterlings and fish in
order to raise the money for
the flowers. "Mrs. Gwen Cun
ningham, the principal of Oak
lawn Elementary School has
been very helpful to us by
encouraging the students to
take care of the flowers," Mrs.
Small said.
Not that their bicentennial
project is completed, the
Washington Heights Flower
and Garden Club plan to spe
culate new avenues of beauti
fication, not only for Oaklawn
Elementary School, but also
for the Charlotte community.

Coal Fired Steam/Electric Generating S'.ations.
Two of the plants are stoker fired with 600.000
pounds/hour and 240.000 pounds/hour ca
pacities One plant is pulverized fireu with
800,000 pounds/hour and 35,000 KW gen- f
erating capacity.
Applicants should have experience in coal
firing, but will consider applicants with Navy
experience. Once hired, employees will be
placed in training program for familiarization
with specific plant and its auxiliaries Rotating
