Dr. Lan iis has also appeared before he City Council to prohibit imoking in theatres. The Lung Association co sponsors a smokers' with irawl clinic at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, which runs for 5 days at a time with 1 to 2 hour sessions. Eighty-five to 90 percent will have quit smoking at the end of the week, and 50 to 60 percent will still be off cigarettes at the end of a year, said Buddy Lippard, Executive Director of the Metrolina Lung Associ ation. Through an extensive edu cation program, the Lung As sociation teaches even first graders about Lung disease and the hazards of cigarette smoking. Pamphlets, tar and nicotene demonstrations, self analyses tests for smokers and a set of human lungs are some of the visual aids used (not to mention free bumper stickers that read, "Stamp Out Old Age-Smoke.") Even though IS million peo ple a year are infected with emphysema, the deadly killer of cigarette smokers, $22 mil lion dollars a day is spent on cigarettes. It has been proven that a certain blood deficiency can cause emphysema, but cigarette smoking is the ma jor cause. "And there is a lung disease caused solely by ciga rettes," Lippard said. Jeff Mooring To Play Lead In CPCC's "Westside Storv" By Sidney Moore Jr. Post Staff Writer Jeff Mooring, 19, a singer and dancer in the "We The People" midway show at Ca rowinds, will play the leading role of Bernardo in Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Theatre's production of "Westside Story". Performances run from July 29 to August 7. Reserva tions may be made through the CPCC Box Office at 377 4000. A Norfolk, Virginia native, Mooring is a student at the School of the Arts in Winston Salem. In the five years he has been involved with theatre, Mooring has performed in such productions as "The Boy Friend," "Purlie," "Adapta tion," "A Sleep of Prisoner," "Only Way of Living," "Caba ret", "Aesops Fables", "The Door," "The Stolen Prince," and "The Me Nobody Knows." Carowinds brought Mooring to Charlotte based on an audi tion the company held at Mooring s school. CPCC thea tre was looking for dancers for its "Westside Story" produc tion and went to Carowinds. One of the dancers was Moor ing. When a New York actor I backed out of doing Um lead part in the musical play, Mooring reluctantly accepted the part. At first, the young perform er was afraid that doing the CPCC production and working at Carowinds might be more than he could handle, he said. But, he found the two job· did not upset him and is delighted to be getting such experience in his career field of interest. The character Mooring plays is a gang leader. The story parallels "Romeo and Juliet", except that the setting is in a New York ghetto.
