87-Year-Old Lady
Is Public Notary
By James Peeler
Post Staff Writer
Mrs. Bennie C. Lee, 87, of
1708 Madison Ave. in McCro
rey Heights residential section
was sworn in last Monday,
July 26, for another five year
commission as a Public Nota
ry.
The commission receive»
last Monday will expire July
24, 1981.
The Montgomery, Alabama
native, widow of the late Dr.
T.H. Lee, has been a Public
Notary for 30 years and says
she was "the first black Public
Notary in Cabarrus County"
when she lived in Concord,
N.C.
Mrs. Lee says she has
"wanted to be a Public Notary
since she was a child" and
when she moved to North
Carolina from Alabama
where Negroes were not al
lQwed to vote the first thing
she did was to "register and
vote and apply for a Public
Notary Commission".
She recalls, that when she
applied for her commission
Gov. Broughton was in office
and she had to renew her
commission every two years
until the tenure of office of
Gov. Robert Scott when the
time was extended to five
years.
Mrs. Lee applied for her
commission so soon after ar
riving in North Carolina that
she had not established resi
dency and had to get Dr.
Cozart, former president of
Barber Scotia College; Mr.
Ernest James, Sr., former
professor at Barber Scotia
College: and Mrs. Pike, wi
dower of Pike Drug Store
owner, to sign papers to meet
residency requirements. ,
Mrs. Lee says she can't
recall the number of docu
ments she has notarized in the
past 30 years but she doesn't
do many now-"just mostly for
neighbors in McCrorey
Heights, to keep them from
going up town."
Mrs. Lee is very active for
her 87 years of age and says
"people don't believe it when I
tell them I don't dye my hair."
She is a member of Memo
rial United Presbyterian
Church, pastored by Re. H.W.
Givens, where she was named
"Mother of the Year-1976," is
Mother of the Church, and
Assistant Chairman of Mis
sionary Unite No. 4.
She has been honored by the
Medical . Society for "Out
standing Fund-raising Ef
forts" and is a Life Member of
the National Council of Negro
Women, and attended the un
veiling of a portrait of Mary
McCloud Bethune which
hangs in the South Carolina
State Capitol Building in Co
lumbia, S.C. While in S.C. she
attended the 100th Birthday
Dinner tribute to Dr. Bethune
at the Carolina Inn.
Mrs. Lee says her hobbies
are "growing flowers and a
dopting children-babies, sons,
and daughters- I've got them
by the hundreds, all over the
country", she said with a
smile.
