Young Hearts End Year With Picnic Members of the Young at Heart Club ended a successful and very enjoyable year with a picnic at Park Road Park Thursday, July 22, according to a recent statement from the club. President Mrs. Sally P. Kel ly announced the next meeting of the club will be Thursday, September 28, at Greenville Neighborhood Center. The final meeting of the year featured a catered din ner, bingo and bridge. Bingo winners, said the statement were Mrs. Lois G. Brown, Mrs. Claudia McFad den, Mrs. Annie Mae Dale, Mrs. Ruth Gaddy, Mrs. lone Jones, Mrs. Estella Stowe, Mrs. Ethel Potts, Mrs.Hattie Barnes, Mrs. Ola Jenkins and Mrs. Annabelle McClary. Guests attending the meet ing were Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Under the Baptist Church's Unified Plan, according to President Porter, "a percent age of annual contributions go to the Shaw University, The General Baptist Convention, The Central Orphanage, and The Lot-Carey Convention." During the ceremony, which followed the regular Sunday Morning Worship Service, President Porter also present ed a check for $300 to Deacon Board Chairman Tennyson Johnson for the work of Ebe nezer Baptist Church's Mis sion endeavors and to help defray to cost of their access ment at the General Baptist Convention. The dinner honoring State Conyere Urges Support For Labor Day March Congressman John Conyers (D Mich) has issued a public appeal for support of the Labor Day March for Human Rights and Labor Rights in: Raleigh, North Carolina. Conyers statement hails the September 6 national demon stration as an important rally ing point in the fight for social justice. "I urge all persons, for whom the struggle for econo mic and political justice in an essential part of life, to join in this momentous march in Ra leigh," said Conyers. Conyers in his appeal notes that the Labor Day demon stration assumes even larger significance against the back drop of political sterility de monstrated by the major poli tical party forces in the coun try. President McQueen was at tended by 10 representatives from Ebenezer Baptist Church's Layman's League. Ms. Jordan Is Goodwill's First Graduate Goodwill Industries of Char lotte is proud to announce a "first," not only for Char lotte's Goodwill, but for all Goodwills in North Carolina. Ms.Laura Jordan, 32, while in training at Goodwill of Char lotte. and showing much per serverance and determina tion, met all requirements for receiving a regular high school diploma, as opposed tc the Graduate Equivalency Di ploma (GEDi, from the Char lotte-Mecklenburg Board ol Education. Ms. Jordan's formal educa tion extended only to the se venth grade. Chapman, social security manager in Charlotte, said Monday. Of the 44,419 social security beneficiaries living in Meek lenburg county, 25,868 are re tired workers and their depen dents. Another 12,480 are re ceiving benefits as the survi vors of workers who have died, and 6,071 are getting benefits as disabled worker; or their dependents. In Mecklenburg county. 18 131 people under age 65 and 26.288 people age 65 and over are receiving monthly social security benefits.
