When 24-year-old Loretta
Jones heard Chaka Khan at
the Charlotte Coliseum 7 or 8
months ago she was so awed
by the vocalist s style and
delivery that she now says she
has abandoned her ambition
of becoming an English teach
er and wants to become a HIT
SINGER like her idol.
The 1970 West Charlotte
High School graduate, who is
presently studying English at
Central Piedmont Community
College, says she has had
considerable experience sing
ing on the choir at Tabernacle
Baptist Church, pastored by
Rev. R.H. Rorie, under the
direction of Minister of Music
Mrs. Heath.
She says she sang in the
Chorus in Jufuor High School
and has studied drama in High
School.
Loretta says she has written
a song she entitled “I Love
You”. The music for her song
was written, according to Ms
Jones, by Blue Check Music
Company of New York, and
she hopes to have it recorded
soon.
Meanwhile, she continued,
"I’m writing a book entitled
“Short Stories and Tales For
Children.”
Since launching her singing
career 6 months ago with the
5-piece CANABUS BAND,
managed by Lee Cunningham,
she has appeared with fellow
singer Cathey Robinson, at
The 400 Club in Orangeburg, S.
C. and Holly Oak Park in
Shelby, N.C.
Her upcoming engagements
include appearances in Ander
son, S.C., Marshall Park on
July 24th and The August Jam
in the Jaycees Building next
month with such well-known
talent as Westside James
Brown, The Gastonia Jackson

The story begins in the

where "Leadbelly" lived with

After the first introduction to

Dear Jirat >jU
A
The WGIV Voter Registration drive on Saturday,
July 17, 1976, was an overwhelming success. We registered
and transfered some 362 people in five hours. That is
by far the best special registration unit we have had
since 1972. . j
You and the staff of WGIV deserve a big thanks
for your effort and concern in this area of public
service.
