For Volunteers
Big Brothers Hold
Honorary Ceremony
By Abigail L. Flanders
Post Staff Writer
It has been said many times
that every boy needs a father
Recent statistics show that
there are more than 5,000
fatherless boys between the
ages of six and seventeen in
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
area, and two-thirds of these
boys are black. This is one of
the reasons that the Big Bro
thers Agency was established
"Big Brothers" is a national
agency composed of adult
males who volunteer their
time and friendship to father
less boys who are in need of
male companionship.

On Wednesday, August the
fourth, the Big Brothers of
Charlotte held a ceremony to
honor those members who
have been active in the organi
zation for three years or more.
The ceremony\was held dur
ing a Board of Directors meet
ing of the Big Brothers and
Big Sisters in the Jeff Suite ol
Jefferson Pilot Broadcasting
Company.
Derwood Hall, Associate
Producer of W’SOC-TV. and
host of the popular Sunday
morning show, "Quest" was
one of the Big Brothers who
was honored. Derwood be
came involved in the program
because of the need for more
black male attention toward
the young black boys who are
now growing up in an age
wnere the usage ol drugs
promiscuity, and deliquency
are revelled in the movies, or
the street corners and by theii
peers. ‘‘I am very happy, to be
involved in the Big Brothers
organization because 1 feel
that it's time for black men tc
take an active part in the
positive growth and maturity
of young black boys. It’s worth
more in life than any dollar
can buy,” Mr. Hall said.
"Many black men are willing
to father children biologically,
but they will not follow
through in the emotionally,
physical or moral upbringing
of that child. This is one of
the major reasons for the
moral decay in our nation
today.lt is up to black men to
set the foundation for a new
moral fiber for the growing
black boys who are being
exposed to the glorification of
the hustler and pimp type
vi uia\.ivo.
Other Big Brothers who
were honored were Evan War
ner, one of the first Big
Brothers to follow a fatherless
boy throughout his youth:
Dick Helms, Geary Winstead,
Jim Muse, Ron Perkins, Tim
Reilly, Steve Van Tyle, Alan
Amery, David McKay and
Otis Roberson, an Upward
Bound counselor for Johnson
C. Smith Univeristy.
The Big Brothers Agency
still needs volunteers. Any
adult male who is interested in
giving love and companion
ship to a fatherless boy can
visit the agency at 212 North
Tryon Street on the eighth
floor of the Johnston Building,
or call 377-3963.
