Ms. Lowe Says Teachers At Point Of Rebellion • m a I'anuiaaie for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board, believes that improved relations between the School Board and the community and the poor con ditions under which teachers are required to work should be the major concerns of the Board and the school adminis tration in the immediate fu ture. In an interview with the POST, last week, Mrs. Lowe said, "A lot of the teachers are -near thp.jpint of rebellion because of poor working con ditions...excessive amounts of paper work, classroom inter r ruptions, short lunch periods and the 14-year limit on salary increases.” She continued, "Such con ditions influence teachers’ at titudes and, therefore, can influence student feelings and the quality of education offer ed " Furthermore, the candi date said these conditions con tribute to an already poor relationship between the School Board and the commu nity, ~~ .... , As a teacher with experi ence in the Charlotte-Meck-^ lenburg Schools and two other school systems. Mrs. Lowe says that the major Drioritv of the local schools should be to broaden and strengthen pro grams in math, reading, En glish composition and gram mer on the elementary and junior high school level; and to make programs available to meet the needs of all secondary school students no matter what there level of achievement may be. "However,” candidate Lowe said, "in order to make this priority a reality teachers must be relieved of so much paper work, hall duty, and the constant elassroom interrup tions, etc., in order for them to devote their time to creative teaching. Since I understand this problem from first-hand experience, I would, as a school board member, serve as liaison between the teach ers, staff and the board in order to lind workable solu tions ” Pat Lowe is the wife of Charles M.
