U Herron Pledges Full Support j to North Carolina Teachers North Carolina's teachers : w'*l get strong support from f the Governor's office in their : efforts to continue the fine job they are doing, Ed O'Herron, Democratic candidate for Go vernor, said today “Our teachers by and large are bringing the best possible educational advantages to our children,” O'Herron said. “They deserve support from public officials and citizens alike. I will see to it that the • Governor's office brings that support.” O'Herron pointed to several areas in which the state's chief executive can help teachers in their classroom work. "I have already pledged myself to support steps to improve the discipline situa : lion in our classrooms," he said. “1 feel that adequate discipline is essential to ade quate teaching. "I will ask the 1977 General Assembly to enact legislation which will make absolutely clear the rights and responsi bilities of all concerned in school discipline, the adminis trators, the teachers, the stu dents and the parents. "Once these rights and res ponsibilities are clearly esta blished. school officials and teachers can feel safe in main taining discipline, and stu dents and parents can know what to expect in the class rooms. and what they must do.” O'Herron noted that he is on record as favoring salary in creases for teachers, which can be accomplished without higher taxes. "1 feel that improving economic condi tions. new business for North Carolina, the aggressive deve lopment program I will head, and economies in state go vernment will make it possi Scared Heart Has Special Program hatred Heart College has adopted a special program where high school students ;may obtain college credit. The program is designed for those students who have demon strated their academic ability and maturity and completed their junior year in high school. The objective of the pro gram is to provide talented students with an opportunity to participate in programs which may not qrdinarily be available to them or may be more academically stimula ting than found in a regular high school situation. The pro gram also enables students to expand their scope «f interest. I-“ examine career opportunities, shorten the time needed to obtain a degree, or begin preparation of their career. The wide range of afternoon and evening courses enable students to attend Sacred Heart College in addition to their normal high school pro gram. In some instances stu dents may be given permis sion to attend college during the normal high school hours. Students interested in the program would follow the nor mal admissions procedure and be registered as part-time students at the College; how ever, their credits would be held and awarded after grad uation from high school. ble to provide pay raises for teachers and all other state employees," O'Herron said. He renewed his pledge of support for the UNC Board of Governors study of present teacher'training methods in, all North Carolina institutions, both public and private. "This study should help strengthen what is good in our teacher training, and help eliminate what is outdated and weak," O'Herron said. He said that there should be a completely racially unbias ed state test for certification of teachers "Without a fair, good test we would be running the risk of certifying teachers who shouldn't be in our class rooms." O'Herron said. O'Herron said he will sup port the State Department of Public Instruction in its ef forts to provide innovative and constructive curricula for all the public schools. “My appointments to the State Board of Education will be people who agree with the old adage about not being the first to try the new nor the last to abandon the old," O'Herron said. "1 feel that the curriculum should be solidly based in the three R's, and that the stu dents should be taught to realize that there are certain subjects they must master whether they wish to do so or not. "I also feel that while stu dents are being kept to the business of learning the basics thoroughly, they also should have opportunity to seek out other avenues of learning which might especially appeal to them " ' Metroling, tJ, " • ' City’s Newest University Will Open September 6 Metrolina University opens in Charlotte on September 6, as the newest .university in North Carolina.
