being fitted every year Of this
number, one-third are in their
teens and sub-teens.
This brings up the question
asked by many parents,
"should I wait until my child is
sixteen years old before 1 let
him wear contacts?" The hu
man eye reaches ful' physical
development by age 7 with ihe
result being that past the age
of seven an individual decision
must be made as to the child's
ability to handle the lenses
This decision must be made b>
the parent because it is based
on the child's ability to as
sume responsibility, perform
the task consistently, and fol
low directions. The emotional
difficulties and rapidly vary -
ing interests will, for certain
individuals, make age sixteen
the worst time for them to be
fitted with contact lenses.
This brings- us to the other
end of the age scale and to the
general statement that the
older a person is. the better
they can wear contact lenses
This is based on the fact that
age causes a decrease in the
sensitivity of the eye. Many
persons past the age of fifty
are now wearing contacts as is
demonstrated by the increas
ing number of bifocal contacts
being fitted. The contact lens
is the method of choice for
correcting a persons vision
after they have had cataract
surgery. If a cataract is re
moved ffom one eye and the
other eye is normal·, the per

ing the contacts and must
have help in inserting and
removing the lenses. In this
case another member of the
family is instructed in lens
handling and care.
Although we have spent
some time discussing it, age is
not the most important aspect
οι wearing contact lenses. Age
along with physical eye struc
ture and presence of allergies
or diseases can be determined
in a short period of time, but
the one known factor is moti
vation. Some practitioners be
lieve that successful contact
lens wearing is 90 percent
motivation. The practioner
must make a judgement at
some time during the fitting
whether the person is really
motivated to wear them or is
this just a whim. The whim
will disappear during the first
week of wearing time, but
proper motivation will result
in a successful contact lens
wearer. You may judge from
this result in a successful
wearer. You may judge from

most difficult, this is correct.
No pain is involved but a
great deal of -concentration
and self-discipline.
We hear a great deal about
gun nuts and sports car fana
tics, but the biggest fanatic is
the successful rontact lens
wearer. Ask a contact lens
wearer if he or she would give
up their lenses and go back to
glasses. Be prepared to re
ceive a lengthy lecture.
