"The subject of prisons is not the most popular topic of our times. But it is an extremely important subject for each of us to study. Over 13,000 men and women are in prison in North Carolina today. 75 per cent of them will be released and within five years return to prison. Obviously something in our present system isn't working, and it's costing the taxpayer over $80,000,000 per year. This is only one of the reasons we sincerely hope there will be high public inte rest in attending these "Pri sons in Crisis" conferences. We feel the public should be more aware of the problem and what ECO can accomplish through its own efforts and with the interest and coopera tion of the community.
