■SDOflS ι DCfll ί; M BILL JOHNSON ■ 1 · "say you saw it here.... The new football season for Black Colleges ushers in rather quietly and without much fanfare this weekend. North Carolina A&T's highly-regarded Aggies will clash with top-rated Virginia Union in Richmond Saturday night and * Delaware State will take on Elizabeth City in Dover, Delaware Saturday afternoon. Johnson C. Smith will move on the scene a week from Saturday when the Golden Bulls open their 1976 campaign with hopes of bettering winning the CIAA Championship. Lenoir Rhynes College will be the Memorial Stadium opponent. ^Did you know that it is estimated that between lb and 20 young men will die of heart strokes during preseason football practice? Some smart guy has also figured that more than one million hale and hearty young Americans will partici pate in football this fall. The NCAA has rejected the applications of seven Black universities to be elevated from . Division 2 to Division 1. New York Knicks' forward Spencer Haywood will host a Saturday Jazz Show, beginning September 28. Look for Mean Joe Green, the 6-4, 275-pound defensive tackle of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the commer cials for the pre-Christmas selling season. He will demonstrate the durability of Ideal Toy Corporation's Mighty Mo vehicles. Don't be too surprise when new coach Bill Hayes of Winston-Salem State University intro duces the "veer" offense to the conference this season. Hayes' young Rams are being viewed as the team likely to push J.C. Smith for the league's championship this season. Publicist John B. Henderson, who rates among the best in the business,'is calling one of the Fayetteville State University football players "Mean" David Jones. A senior, Jones tips the scales at 250. Henderson will be sorely disappointed if he does not earn plaudits as one of the best in the conference when the season is .gone. Bet you didn't know that the surest way to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm. Handsome Ken Koontz, the smooth talking WBTV newscaster, will again handle the public address system for all Johnson C. Smith ■! University home football games. It will be the fifth straight year that the 1972 graduate of the university has worked the mike for the Golden Bulls. Married men may have better halves but bachelors have better quarters. Coach Hornsby Howell says defense will carry the Aggies to the MEAC football championship this fall. That sounds rather strange since Howell is more widely-known as an offense-ori ented drillmaster. Talk about toughness. Here is one about the football coach who was so tough that he gives his captain 10 laps around the field for losing the coin toss! Howard University has released a slick football press book, "Reflections of City Life." It notes that the Bison will play five games in HFK Stadium on Friday nights. Delaware State will be met on the H.U. campus. The Delaware State Cagers, who were woeful last winter, have added β'ΙΟ'Λ" center Mike Kenzslowe to their roster. The Bridgeton high school standout had 57 blocked shots to his credit last season. Promoters are calling next Saturday's battle «between Bethune-Cookman and Texas Southern the "Battle of the Year". It will be played in the Orange Bowl at Miami, Fla. The World Service Life 300 will offer the richest purse in late model sportsman racing history at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 9. Trials are set for Thursday, October 7 when the first 10 spots in the 44-car starting field will be determined. The purse will be worth $125.245. „ In Playoffs Series Morris Field, Hoskins Win; Bummers Eliminate Hawks λ irc v/iwiiuiie nco ο iras ana the Charlotte Bummers esta blished themselves as teams to be recognized with in the Triple County Semipro Base ball League Champiqnship Playoff Series, underway this week at the Harding Higji School Athletic Field. Wright aided the triumph with a homerun, sin gle and 2 rbi's while Thomp son was hitting a single and a double and Randy Falls a triple.
