UNCC Enrollment
Increases To
7,800 Students
Enrollment at the Univer
sity of North Carolina at Char
lotte has shown an increase
for the 10th straight year.
This fall's enrollment is ap
proximately 7,800, up 230 from
the 7,570 of last fall for a three
percent increase.
Officials said that the figure
would have been even higher
except that many students
went elsewhere when the dor
mitories were filled early and
when students were turned
away in four programs last
spring.
Plans are on the drawing
boards for dormitory units to
house 240 additional students.
Beyond that, University offi
cials are requesting of the
upcoming Legislature that it
authorize space for 500 more
students.
At one point during the
summer more than 300 stu
dents were on a waiting list for
dormitory rooms.
In architecture, art, busi
ness and nursing, UNCC gets
more qualified applicants
than it can accommodate with
the facilities and the number
of faculty that it has, officials
said.
UNCC’s classroom and of
fice crunch is expected to be
temporarily eased when a new
$6 million building approved
in a statewide bond issue last
spring is completed in 1978
Artifacts will be placed on
exhibit at the AACSC's office
when it finds a home at Spirit
Square, the Charlotte center
for the arts. Sept. 26 Contribu
tions may include anything
from books, to documents, to
pictures
When the organization
moves into Spirit Square, lo
cated at 110 E. 7th St., it will
need office furniture-desks,
bookcases, typewriters and
display cases. Anyone who
wishes to contribute any of
these items or who knows
someone who might, should
contact the AACSC at 334-8566.
The AACSC is a community
organization which was found
ed on the campus of the
University of North Carolina
at Charlotte in May 1974. Its
purpose is to preserve the
history and culture of Afro
Americans with emphasis on
the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
area. and to develop among all
citizens, an increased aware
ness in the area's cultural
diversity.
To make the AACSC a teach
ing museum of Black history
and culture unparalled in the
Southeast, the organization
needs input from the people it
plans to serve. Membership is
open to any interested person.
The next meeting will be held
7:30 p m. each Tuesday at the
Excelsior Club, 921 Beatties
Ford Rd.
