JOHN LEWIS _ ...Voter rights leader ‘The Vote Is Powerful’ Lewis Tells Students uiuiicjf mwrc jr. Post Staff Writer “There’s nothing wrong with being an agitator if you are agitating for the right cause,” said John Lewis, exe cutive director of the Atlanta based Voter Education Pro ject (VEP). Lewis, 36, and a veteran of the civil rights movement, spoke at Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) Monday morning, September 13. He and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, wife of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were scheduled to appear at a hastily organized program on _the JCSU campus. Mrs. King did not appear because she had no one to care for her children while she traveled, said Lewis. “The vote is powerful,” Le wis proclaimed to JCSU stu dents. Laws, emi nent minister of the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church of Brooklyn, New York, will be the guest evangelist for revi val services at Mount Carmel Baptist Church beginning Sun day, September 26 and contin uing through Tuesday, Octo ber 1. Dr. Laws will preach Sunday at 11 a.m. and each evening, Monday-Friday-at 8:15. Prayer service will begin at 7:30 each evening, with several vocal choirs participa ting. Dr. Laws, a native of Phila delphia, Pennsylvania, has served as president at the General Baptist State Conven tion of New Jersey. He is a member of the World Council oUChurches and trustee of Virginia Seminary A College. dices in me civil ngnts move ment and indicated his belief that the movement is now evolving into a quest for politi cal power. He says that power will be gained through the proper use of the ballot. As one of the first Freedom Riders, Lewis was attacked in nearby Rock Hill, S.C. in 1961. He was beaten a number of times by white mobs and he was jailed 40 times during the 1960S. His motivation to endure such treatment came from his belief in the principle of non violence as a tool of social change. The Troy, Alabama native was educated at American Baptist Seminary and Fisk University in NashviHe, Tenn. Lewis says the VEP does research and provides grants to local groups in southern states to conduct voter regis tration drives. “We have tried to continue the registration of blacks and to enhance the participation of blacks in the political pro cess," said Lewis. About three and nne-hnlf million blacks are eligible to vote, but are not registered to vote, according to Lewis. His viaite to Charlotte and A&T University in Greens- - boro are part of an 11 state tour to promote more wide spread political participation by blacks. A possibility exists that Mrs. King, a VEP board member, may visit Charlotte before the November general election, said Lewis.
