James A. Clarke ...Former CMS principal James Clarke Receives Doctor’s Degree James Alexander Clarke, former principal and program director in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system for fifteen years, received the ' Doctor of Education degree : from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the 1976 summer graduation exercises. Dr. Clarke's major concen trations were in the areas of educational administration, elementary and secondary ; curriculum. The title of Dr. Clarke’s dissertation was; A Study of Perceptions of Disci pline Problems in Secondary Education in North Carolina. • J Prior to earning the doctorate from Carolina, Dr. Clarke was a magna cum laude graduate, in the areas of biology and general science, from Johnson C. Smith University; holds the M.S.degree in educational administration from Teachers College-Columbia University. Dr. Clarke has just com pleted five years as associate superintendent, in the area of instruction and curriculum, for Asheville City Schools. He was the first Black in North Carolina to be appointed to the position of associate superin tendent with key responsibili ty for heading up curriculum : and instruction in a major school system. During the years Dr. Clarke worked for Charlotte-Meck lenburg School Board, he ser ved as principal of Woodland and Paw Creek-Hoskins Ele mentary Schools, Plato Price Union School (Grades 1-12), and Irwin Avenue Junior High School. He was also program director for three years. since going to Asneviue, Ur. Clarke has been continually involved in community organ izations. Presently he serves on the following Board of Directors: Chamber of Com merce, American Red Cross, Asheville-Buncombe Alcohol and Drug Commission, YMCA, Youth Services Action Group, Greater Asheville Ed ucational Radio Association, and the Better Business Bu reau. Dr. Clarke is married to the former Mary Zeigler of Savan nah, Georgia. They have one son, James A. Clarke II, who is a senior at East Carolina University majoring in busi ness administration with a concentration in manage ment. F George Shipman, addressing an all-college assembly in Va rick Memorial Auditorium last Friday, outlined some of the AME Zion Church-sup ported college's goals for the 1976-77 school year. Chief among the 10 goals listed by Dr. Shipman was planning and managing for accountability - emphasizing the team approach; followed by the increasing of student enrollment to 1,000 with a social, cultural, education and economic mix, as representa tive as possible, of the total (student) population. “We shall strive to our utmost to assist these students to ac hieve their maximum educa tional and social potential and retain them through the suc cessfu^^omgletior^oj^hei^ undergraduate education," he said. The providing of additional opportunities for the profes sional advancement of faculty and staff through study leaves and grants, workshops, semi nars and institutes, with parti cular emphasis on new teach ing strategies and student aca demic advisement, was next. The others were: -Strengthening the curricu lum to challenge both students and faculty and to provide students with the type of edu cation that increases their career options. "We shall ba lance our liberal arts curricu lum with career-oriented cur riculum. Fiber Industries pre sented a $5,000 grant to the college for scholarships for students interested in chemis try," said Dr. Shipman. -Expanding the Community Services Program, such as Livingstone Drug Abuse Pre vention Project, Upward Bound and Titles XIX and XX. with adequate personnel for manning the program. -Increased job opportunities for Livingstone graduates through Teacher Education. Social Welfare and Coopera tive Education programs, the stimulation of more recruit ment visits from industry and professional agencies to the college and improvement of students' interview tech niques. -Increased usage of the (Car negie) library by both stu dents and faculty. "We have the Learning Resource Cen ter. the Living-Learning Cen ters and the Reading Labora tory available for our stu dents," said President Ship man -Expanding social, cultural and recreational programs for students as reflected through the improvement of social interaction, religious, cultural and recreational involvement of students, faculty and staff. -Continued growth in quality of the choral union and the marching and concert bands, and working for successful records in all inter-collegiate athletic activities: football, basketball, track and field, tennis, golf and wrestling. To achieve these goals, Dr. Shipman announced some 33 new faculty and staff persons, with an additional two people returning from study leaves of-absence. Dr. Larry Shannon will head the new administrative office of long range planning. New faculty appointments include Ms. Shirley A. Chapman, busi ness; Oliver A. Hord, busi ness; Ms. Carrie Hunter, so cial welfare; Dr. Elmer Le Roy Johnson, education; Ms. Thelmond Johnson, social wel fare; Dr. Dorothy D. Lee, social welfare.
