HAPPILY SMILING JACQUES BELTON ...Won first place in contest Little Sharon Crosby Second place winner Jacques Helton, ohafon Crosby Win Church Contest raoore jr. Post Staff Writer Eleven month old Jacques Belton won first place and a *9 savings bond in a baby contest at Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Sunday, Sep tember 26. Young Matrons Missiona ries of the church sponsor the annual contest, which this year included a fashion shown and talent by church youths. The club raised *1,061.36. Second place winner was four month old Shawn Crosby. He won a *25 bond. Other contestants received a gift certificate. They were Jerry Ezell, Malcolm Lipscomb, Ni cole Lesenby and Sandra Wright. i Rev- N.E. Kerry organized \ the young matrons in 1965 said * a statement from the group, i* Lula Martin, the group's first . president, is credited with successfully motivating mem bers to continue the group mission The baby contest was first organized to raise money to buy much needed hymn books -for the church. Other worthy projects have been undertak en since that time. Visits to the homes of sick church members, hospitals and rest homes are included among the activities of the mission group. Aid was given to a family whose belongings were destroyed by fire. Such courtesies as sending sympathy cards and birthday cards are practiced by the missionaries. On several occasions, the group has served as hostesses for church dinners. A family fun night is spon sored annually by the mission aries to help church members become better acquainted. Holshouser Sets “Employ The Handicapped Week” me week ot October J-y. 1976 has been proclaimed 'National Employ the Handi capped Week" in North Caro lina by Governor James E Holshouser. Jr in accordance with President Gerald Ford The Governor said’that this special week is a time to emphasize that emploving handicapped people not onlv benefits them but North Caro lina and the whole nation The 1976 census projection indicates that there are J84.447 North Carolinians between the age of 15-64 with work disabili ties. These do not include students and those with disabi lities who are institutionaliz ed "Many of these people are self-supporting due to their own will and determination and also by efforts of our states Council on Employ ment of the Handicapped and Vocational Rehabilitation pro gram," Governor Holshouser said. He commends the inanv employers across the state who have already provided our handicapped citizens with job opportunities and urges others to do likewise “We can all be proud that North Carolina has one of the best and most successful Vo cational Rehabilitation pro grams for its handicapped citizens in the country During the past fiscal year, we ranked number one in our region and it appears we will rank either fourth or fifth nationally in the number of people who were successfully rehabilitated. Governor Holshouser said. The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation of the N C De partment of Human Resourc es reports that 13.15.’ people were rehabilitated and 82.-WO were served during the year The Governor's Council on Employment of the Handi capped will kick off this spe cial week with its annual meeting that will be held in Wilmington on October 1 .
