Aaron Cunningham South’s superstar Cunningham Honored As Player Of Week By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer During the summer, Aaron Cunningham, could be seen every morning and afternoon at Bryant Park practicing sprints and doing exercises. The park is only a short hop form the 700 Walnut Avenue home of the six-foot, 170-pound South Mecklenburg High School quarterback. All-Countv as a junior, the fleet foot signal called for last year’s 7-3 Sabres, who won their last seven ball games, devised this routine, to bolster his team's efforts for the top spot. • Recently, things have been loooking bad for the Sabres. After an impressive opening win against Gastonia Ash brook, they lost to Myers Park and North. However, the team regrouped this weekend under Cunningham directions for a 7-0 victory over the Olympic Trojans. He scored the only touch down of the game and single handedly gave the Torjans a a fit. To get himself psyched up, before a game, he cuts on his stereo and puts on some Earths Wind and Fire or some other mellow music. Music, Aaron says relaxes him and he is able to reach higher heights of inspiration when he listens to Maurice White’s group whose mystical music is heavily ladened with astrology and inspiring words. The tough .part of the Sabres schedule is over and they now stand 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference. West .Charlotte, Harding, Independence, West Mecklenburg, Garinge, and East remain on the schedule. Cunningham has been play ing football since he was in the seventh grade. He played for three years at Quail Hollow Junior High School where he was named ’ Most Valuable Back” on a team that posted a 7-4 record. In the winter, he stars as a forward on the Sabre basket ball team. Last year, Cunning ham was a member of the 1976 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A ■ championship basketball tpam His favorite sports stars are Oscar Robertson and David Thompson. The 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs Robert Cunningham, said he likes to read and the biggest sports thrill ever for this affable gentlemen was scoring 39 points in a junior varsity basketball game with Independence two years ago His future goals include col lege and a career in either basketball or football • Other stars of the week include Henderson Threatt of West Charlotte.
