September 26. A total of $2,813.23 was raised by six contestants for the title. Mrs. Eady raised $672; Mrs. Minnie Vaughns, $618; Mrs Julia Phillips. $585; Mrs. Mamie D. Phillips. $418; Mrs Myrtle Henderson, $324; Mrs. Esther White, $180.23. The winner's name will be engraved on a plaque and placed in the front entrance of the church. Guest speaker for the pro gram was Mrs Josehpine T. Morris, General Secretary of the Bureau of Supplies of the AME Church. Her speech was entitled, “Mission Is’’. She defined her topic as being evangelism, involvement, so cial action, investment, out reach and celebration. Prior to the program, the church observed Woman’s Home and Foreign Missionary Day. Women of the church led a procession and participated in the 11 a.m. service. Rev. Vernon Chase of the California Conference of the AME Zion Church was the speaker for the morning ser vice. Chase is presently study ing for a Master of Divinity Degree at Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury. ANTIOCH The 90th Anniversary and Homecoming celebrations of Antioch Baptist Church, 232 Skyland Avenue, will be ob served Sunday, October 10, at 3 p.m. Rev. David Carter of First Baptist Church in Kannapolis will conduct the service. At7:30p.m„ Rev. W.G. Hall of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Wadesboro, will deliver the opening sermon for Antioch’s Annual Fall Revival. Revival services will conti nue Monday, October 10 through Friday, October 15, with Dr. J.W. White, pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Bap tist Church of Asheville, as guest evangelist. Rev. White Was bom in Bertie County-the section known as Indian Woods. He attended the Chowatic Ele mentary School, and did three years of high school work at the Bertie Academy. He grad uated from Saint Augustine College High School in Ra leigh, in 1929. Dr. White grad uated from Shaw University with the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Divinity, Masters of Divinity, and was honored with Doctor of Divinity in 1955. Before leaving Bertie Coun ty, Dr. White pastored the Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in North Hampton County, and the Saint Luke and Saint Francis Missionary Baptist churches in Bertie County. ur. wnue served lour years as Director of the Baptist Training Union of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, six years as First-Vice-President of the General Baptist State Conven tion, and five years as Presi dent. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw University for seven years, and is presently a member of that board of which he has been an active member for 18 years. Dr. White is now serving as pastor of the historic Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Asheville, North Carolina, where he has done and is still doing a great work. He has served this congrega tion for twenty-nine years. He is married to EthelTT White. They have two sons, John W. White, Jr., and Ralph : D. MAYFIELD MEMORIAL The Senior Choir of the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church will observe its Annual Celebration on Sunday, Octo ber 10, at 6 p.m. The Senior Choir is under the direction of Mrs. Delores Dial. President of the Senior Choir is James Raye, who has served in that capacity since the choir was organized. The celebration promises to be one of great inspiration as the love of Christ will be told in song. Miss Barbara Alexander is Minister of Music at Mayfield Memorial, and the Music De partment consists of five choirs. Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church is located at 700 Sugar Creek Road West and is pas tored by Dr.H.S. Diggs. All Friends of Mayfielf are invited to share in this event. STEELCREEK Mrs. Milas McClain of Steel Creek Baptist Church won first place in a Bicentennial States Rally, Sunday, Septem ber 26. Members of the church Mis sionary Society conducted the rally. The master of ceremony for the evening program was Robert Reeves. His mother Katie was credited with the idea of using a states rally as a fund raising project. An unofficial report pegged the total amount of money , raised at $2,445. Each state representative was asked to raise $100. An extra participant caused the rally to have 51 states. The problem was resolved by al lowing the Great Lakes to be represented. Missionary president Grace Hill said "ladies of the mis sionary were very pleased with the way the members worked to make this program a success." Church member Fred Heath l discussed the topic, "He’s A ‘ Friend Of Mine.” The young adult guest a pea ker “gave a moving and soul searching talk from which he drew from and expounded on the 66 books of the Bible using Route 66 as a theme," said a church statement. Heath, said the statement, has been an orator in the church since childhood. Second place winner in the rally was Mrs. Jerry Love. NEW EMMANUEL Kate Lassiter of Asheboro will be the guest speaker for Laiety Day at New Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, Sunday, October 10. Mrs. Lassiter will speak for the 11 a.m. service. She is the wife of Dr. George A. Jones, a dentist. Before returning to Ashe boro, the speaker headed a social program in New York City. Mrs. Lassiter also ser ved Congregational Christian Churches in the southeast as a field worker. She finished Peabody Aca demy of Troy, N.C. and Bricks Junior College of Bricks, N.C. The speaker also earned a master’s degree from Colum bia University of New York City. - At 2 p.m., the church will host an anniversary program of the Thompson and Thomp sonettes Gospel Singers.
