W. Charlotte Star West Charlotte’s Frank Carr Wins “Player Of Week” Honors By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer Ever been run over by a MACK truck-’ How about a car-.’ If you want to know how it feels ask the members of the Olympic Trojan football team. They’ll gladly tell you that'it "doesn't feel pleasant." Still not convinced? Go over to Mint Hill and ask the Independence Patriots. They’ll tell you. And if all the testimony from the above football teams still doesn't convince you, go down to Colony Road and ask the green and white Mustangs of Myers Park High School. All of these teams have been run over by a CARR That is, Frank Carr of West Charlotte High School, t|iis week's Char lotte Post “Player of the Week." Listen to his coach Rudy Abrams describe him. South Carolina State held on for a 7-6 victory over nation ally ranked Alcorn A&M and N.C. A&T romped to a 37-22 win over Johnson C. Smith. Florida A&M came from be hind to nip Howard, 16-14 in non-conference games. In conference play Morgan State played tough defense to defeat North Carolina Central, 12-10 while Delaware State blanked winless Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-0. North Carolina A&T and Morgan State are the only unbeaten teams in conference play with 1-0 league marks while S.C. State has a 2-1 family record and Delaware State and Howard both have 1-1 records. A nair nf rnnfprpnrp oamoc will highlight a full schedule of games for MEAC teams this Saturday. Morgan State will beat Maryland-Eastern Shore and Delaware State visits Ho ward. In non-conference play North Carolina Central hosts Virginia State, South Carolina State will be at home against Johnson C. Smith and A&T plays host to Norfolk State Saturday night. South Carolina State scored in the first half on an 11-yard run by quarterback Jesse Pra ther and Malcolm Montgo mery added the PAT from placement. Alcorn scored in the final period on a 29-yard pass from Essex McBride but the PAT from placement was wide. North Carolina Central could not come up with enough offense against Morgan State. Morgan State capitalized on a safety, a 10-yard run by quar terback Allan Rose plus a 42-yard field goal by Duane Danner, N.C. Quarterback Elsworth Tur ner passed for three touch downs to lead A&T to its vicTory. Abrams, during the sum mer. was hesitant about his team's chances for a playoff berth but an opening loss to Richmond County’s Raiders was followed by victories over Independence, Myers Park, Olympic, and North Mecklen burg. Currently the Lions are in the driver's seat, tied with undefeated East Mecklenburg for the conference lead, both with 4-0 records. - However, Myers Park and West Mecklenburg are 3-1, and Abrams says he has tough games remaining with East, South and West. With six-foot, 156-pound Carr running from the flanker position, the Lions task should be easy. The Scott Bridgewater Frank Carr connection could carry the Lions a long way. Carr, with one TD against Richmond County and two each against Olympic and Independence, is getting bet ter every game and manages to achieve success despite the fact that he is often doubled teamed. As, long as West Charlotte keeps Carr running they may go places. Other stars for the week included Eric Westbrook of East Mecklenburg...Larry Brown of Garinger...Leon Montgomery of Indepen dence... Archie Matthews of West Charlotte...David Brooks of Garinger...Darryl Byrd of Myers Park...Curtis Wilson of Myers Park...Phil Henderson of Harding...Aaron Cunningham of South Meck lenburg.
