Beginning Uecember 8 Eastern Schedules Non-Stop Flights To Houston, Texas Eastern Airlines will begin the first daily non-stop service to Houston, Texas on Decem ber 8, when the airline chang es to its winter schedule of flights leaving Douglas Muni cipal Airport. Announcing the new non stop service today, A. Russell Upshaw, Regional Director Sales & Services, South Cen tral Region, said Flight 385 will leave Charlotte daily at 9:50 a.m. and arrive at 10:53 a.m. in Houston. Eastern's returning non stop service, Flight 388, will leave Houston daily at 1:20 p.m. and arrive at 4:12 p.m. in Charlotte. The winter schedule also provides six other Eastern services to Houston via con ' necting flights in Atlanta. "The addition of Houston to the list of non-stop destina tions served by Eastern should benefit many business travelers in the Charlotte area," said Mr. Upshaw. "The1 two cities share a community of interests in that they are both fast-growing centers of commercial and financial ac tivity." Eastern's winter schedule will also provide daily non stop service to fourteen other leading business destinations: Atlanta, Jacksonville, Akron Canton, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Ohio; New York City, Newark, Phil adelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. 9 , * ^ — — , Health Department Gave 4,120 Doses Of Flu Vaccine The Mecklenburg County Health Department gave 4,120 doses of bivalent flu vaccine to citizens 60 and older during a public clinic this past week end, and later this week the vaccine will be available at the Health Department and its annexes for those persons who did not come to the public clinic. Beginning Thursday, Octo ber 28, citizens 60 and older may be vaccinated at the Health Department, 1200 Bly the Boulevard. The best time to come, in order to go through quickly, is at one of these hours: Thursdays, 8 to 11 a.m.; Fridays, 2 to 4 p.m. and Mondays, 8 to 11 a.m. or 2 to 4 p.m. Beginning Friday, you may also get the vaccine at the Health Department's exten Mrs. Johnson Experiences First Plane Ride Mrs. Mary C. Johnson, of 2017 Lynhurst Ave., experi enced a "first" in her life this past weekend that she report edly enjoyed. Mrs. Johnson, who is 74-years-old, left Char lotte to visit her sister, Mrs. Sarah Warren, of'Norristown, Pennsylvania, on the 8:15 flight Friday morning. She made the flight after discou raging the members of her family to board a plane. "I was surprised that she consented to fly because she has always been opposed to me flying," said Mrs. Eva Wiley, Mrs. Johnson's daugh ter. "She enjoyed the trip so much, she's planning to fly again." Mrs. Johnson was accom panied on her night by her grand daughter, Mary Cathe rine Johnson, and her great grand daughter, 16 month-old Tammy Johnson. The Health Department has notified all private physicians who have requested bivalent flu vaccine that the vaccine is ready to be picked up at the Health Department. Private physicians in Mecklenburg have requested 9,217 doses of the bivalent vaccine, which is protection against A New Jer sey, or swine flu, and A Victoria, the strain of flu that was prevalent last year. The private physicians will use this vaccine for their chroni cally ill patients and for those 60 and older. Nursing homes have also-been contacted and vaccine is being made avail albe to the homes that request it. Beginning Monday, Novem ber 8. the Health Department will give shots to the chroni cally ill persons who come to the Department or to one of the annexes. The schedule for these shots will be the same as those for the vaccination of the 60 and older. All of the vaccine is free, and all shots given at the Health Department will be free. Private physicians may charge for administering the vaccine. The program at the Health Department will be an on-going one, lasting for an indefinite period of time. No dates have been set for the public clinics for citizens 18 to 60. The County is still waiting to receive a sufficient quantity of monovalent vac cine, "which will be used at these clinics. The vaccine is protection against only the A New Jersey or swine flu. Dr. Maurice Kamp, Direc tor of the Health Department, and Mrs. Judy Forrest, Coor dinator of the County's Swine Flu Vaccination Program, called the weekend clinic for older citizens a successful operation. The clinic was staffed by Health Department nurses and by Red Cross staff and volunteers. Throughout the two-day period, citizens came and went with a mini mum of delay. Even at the peak hours, it took no more than seven minutes for a person to enter the building, be briefed, turn in a consent form, be vaccinated, and re turn to the parking lot. The clinic was held in the County's Social Services Cen ter on Billingsley Road. The Health Department number to call for additional Mflinmtion is 374-2165.
